How (or if) the EU wants to build its military is their own business. Their leaders (and basic government structure) are a lot more trustworthy than, say, Iran.
I voted no. I think that it would be rediculous to abandon NATO. NATO does nothing, but protect Europe. If anyone attacks Europe, the US has to help. If the US attacked a single country in NATO (like France, cuz Americans seem to want to 'retrieve' the Statue of Liberty's little sister) it would unite them against the US, not to mention bring Russia into the conflict.
... ...
On second thought, yes they should leave NATO in the interest of world peace.
This would only further harm relations with the United States, which makes it worse for the world in general. There are alot of people that would love to see the US and Europe at each others throats. If you want more chaos, this should do the trick.
It also isn't a nice gesture towards Turkey or Canada...
I completely agree. It would make it even easier for the United States to continue its imperialistic ambitions. Plus, I have a feeling that a pan-European Army would be weaker than the current combined forces of the EU.
You're forgetting several European nations are already helping the U.S. with our....."imperialistic ambitions".....in the Middle East.
Edit: departing NATO might make it easier for the U.S., or might allow the EU to assert itself more independently. Cause and effect are tricky beasts.....
I can see what the end result of this will be and it does not look pretty for the rest of the world. It must be noted that this POV is from a Biblical perpective.
They probably should, its obvious they are the new future rivals of the US most likely, and it would be foolish to maintain a military alliance with possible future enemies.
Only groups that are strong enough are rivals... and EU is not yet. And implication of rivalry doesn't equal enemies. I think Russia is strong enough to be a potential threat.
I think we should "build" our own army and transform NATO into alliance of USA, EU and Canada (+Norway, Turkey and Island, but i expect they will join EU some day).
Breaking NATO can be contraproductive. An alliance of equal partners would be more benefical. West should stay firm, because Russia, China and India will surely try to challange its position in future.
(therefore i can't vote for any of offered answers to your question AVN, because I want both EU army and NATO, and I have opinion )
