In the interest of preventing redundancy, I would ask that this thread does NOT simply resolve itself to discussing how bonkers our upcoming US dictator is. Instead, I would like to focus on the important issues at hand when it comes to the price of eggs, so my question to all of our beautiful OT users is this:

Would you be supportive of the US using military means to acquire Greenland and/or the Panama Canal? Why or why not? Pros and cons?

I have put together my pros and cons list:

Pros: If Greenland admitted as a state, we could update the US flag, which is tacky at best (we would probably just change up the star pattern though)

The rest of the world might finally use this action as a tipping point to ‘liberate’ the American people and bring them democracy, much like we did in Iraq

Cons: War is bad and lots of people usually die

Greenland is really cold

Please discuss and bring important and extremely serious rationale only

Trump should just make a post on x, and change his facebook status.

Saves alot of hassle.

He should be careful when going there though, the Greenlanders are trained hunters and not likely to miss.

With only 56,000 people (all with other citizenship) Greenland does not have enough people for US statehood.

Luckily we are welllll past the point of pesky things like “rules” or “constitutions” or “laws” mattering

Seriously? No.

Panama canal is a valid strategic thing but not so valuable it'd be worth the bad PR.

Greenland makes sense if you can buy it with the consent of the Danish government and the actual people of Greenland. You'd need both, but in the extreme long term, it would probably pay off if you expect both future tech improving access, and scarcity, to both become more relevant.

Canada, nah. But: hear me out. If we annexed Canada, it'd really hurt the Republicans politically, so... Sure, it wouldn't help the Canadians. But is this nevertheless justifiable from the utilitarian perspective?

Watching the Canadian Tories react to Trump clamoring to annex Canada has been fun.

In all seriousness, does it really necessitate explanation as to why turning around and invading your allies is a dumb idea?

CTV_News said:
Earlier today, Ford said Canada would buy Alaska and two other states in response to Trump’s frequent taunts about treating the country as a U.S. state.

“You know something, to the president I’ll make him a counteroffer; How about if we buy Alaska and throw in Minnesota and Minneapolis at the same time?” the premier said Monday while speaking with reporters about the threat of looming tariffs and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement that he’ll step down.

He later told CNN said that those comments were made in jest.

On the other hand, Kevin O'Leary is in full simp mode for Trump's empire-building.

Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary praised President-elect Donald Trump’s continued fascination with annexing Canada as an American state, saying there was “something great” about it because it would form “the most powerful country on earth.”

America would instantly become one of the most hated countries in the world so I say no. And Greenland already has democracy anyway

Btw I have been posting pros and cons from the point of view of an American. But what aboot, say, a Canadian?

Seems like a classic win-win-win to me!

America hasn't wrongfully invaded a country in over 20 years, the last time being 2003. After enough time passes, wrondoings of the past fade from memory.
Shockingly, the lifespan of people living in those countries is over 20 years, and the impact of American meddling isn't an isolated, singular event. The US only withdrew in 2021, as well.

Well no, the goal here is colonial possession. The US doesn't allow its territories to vote.
