Should Warhorses obsolete Ratha and Chariots?

Apparently, by developing the ability to build Knights (of which I can only build 4, max), I have given up the ability to build Chariots and Ratha (of which I could build dozens -- as many as my economy could support).

It has definitely put a crimp in my war plans, as I can no longer replace lost Ratha.

Is it still possible to build Radiant Guard and upgrade them to Ratha? If so, it could be a work-around.

Huh. Nope. Looks like I lost the ability to make Radiant Guard, too. Probably when I gained the ability to make Phalaxes.

tier 3 units shouldn't anymore

Looks like neither Chariots nor Ratha nor Radiant Guard are in the upgrade path for low-level units, either. Honestly, I don't recall if Radiant Guard or Ratha were before, but I definitely remember Chariots being part of the upgrade path for Warriors and Swordsmen.

I thought that you regain the ability to make T3 units when you max out your National units. And I thought even that was addressed in a recent patch...

Only that neither Rathas nor Radiant Guards nor Chariots are actually Tier 3 units (or at least have been until most recently when the tech-tree has changed). :p They usually are counted as late Tier 2 (which is true in sense of hammer-cost, beaker cost for the techs and average power.).

Might be the reason why they still obsolete. Might be worth a change (at least for the religion specific ones.). Maybe Kael takes notice and! wants to change this...

Edit: Tier 3 Units are not supposed to obsolete anymore as per one of the most recent patches...

A possible workaround if you can spare a few hammers or time: Build your allowed number of Knights and build some rathas to upgrade + delete the prebuild knights to upgrade the rathas afterwards.

Or another one possible even more feasible: just build those units in a city with no buildings that enable knights. (so a city with Empyrean + without stables should still be able to produce rathas. Thats not possible for things that have the same building enable them as the unit that obsoletes them but it should work here. :) Might also work for Chariots in cities with a siege workshop but without a stable or for Radiant Guards in a city with the Empyrean but without a training yard.)

Once you have four knights, you can build chariots and horsemen again (and most likely also rathas). So either you build the four knights first, or you just put them in a building queque somewhere.

I checked this with hippus advanced start patch s.

I don't agree that units should never obsolete, but I do feel that National and World units should never obsolete any other unit.

Yeah, that's kinda my beef with it. Don't replace a unit I can build 3 or 4 of per turn with a unit I can build 4 of, total.

Even if there are workarounds, it's not quite the same. Particularly since Knights don't get Blinding Light and Ratha do.

The easiest work around that costs absolutely nothing is to queue up four knights in a city. With them queued up, you'll be able to build the earlier units. Then just make sure you keep something in front of the knights so they never get built. When you're ready to upgrade units to knights, just take them out of the queue.

As has been mentioned, this problem should have been addressed in a recent patch. Are you using the latest patch or an earlier one?

Repeated for emphasis.

Thank you. It wasn't clear enough from the first poster. Did you notice these posts?

The workaround suggestions are something he can do until Kael notices this post and fixes the problem in a future patch.

I agree religious units should never obsolete. I'm not sure about the drown=>stygian guard mechanic though. Perhaps if drowns cannot upgrade to a stygian guard and stay drowns forever?
