Longshot US Senate candidate from SC indicted

By MEG KINNARD (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Longshot U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene was indicted Friday on two charges, including a felony charge of showing pornography to a South Carolina college student.

A Richland County grand jury indicted Green for disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity — a felony —
as well as a misdemeanor charge of communicating obscene materials to a person without consent.

Greene, who surprised the Democratic party establishment with his primary victory, was arrested in November after authorities said he approached a student in a University of South Carolina computer lab, showed her obscene photos online, then talked about going to her dorm room.

Greene declined comment at his home. He has also refused to talk about the charge in interviews.

Greene, 32, won a shocking victory in the June 8 Democratic primary. The unemployed military veteran handily defeated Vic Rawl, a former lawmaker and judge who had been considered an easy win by the party establishment.

Up to that point, Greene had done no visible campaigning and had no website, fundraising or staff.

In the months since, Greene has given a series of awkward interviews to reporters clamoring for more information on the unemployed man who lives in Manning with his ailing father. In one interview, he suggested that the state's economy could be improved by making and selling action figures depicting him in his uniform.

Last month, Greene gave his first public speech, a 6 1/2-minute recitation of his previous comments and commitment to jobs and education. He now has a website and says he has raised less than $1,000.

He faces Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint in the fall. The popular incumbent has raised more than $3 million.

Associated Press writer Page Ivey in Manning contributed to this report.

I would have thought it being a misdemeanor would have been going too far, but this seems a bit too ridiculous, even by South Carolinian standards.

The subtlety of the difference seems to be lost on me... why is one a felony and the other a misdemeanor?

Also, this shouldn't be considered any worse than subjecting art exhibit patrons with the more "modern" art that gets so much praise...

I agree.

As a College student, I don't see any reason why she couldn't refuse to look.

Its South Carolina though, they are pretty conservative. Its still surprising though.

Is it like that in Virginia where you live?

I don't think so, as I see porn being sold in stores here. If I'm reading it correctly, it sounds like selling, purchasing or promoting obscenity (in the form of porn) in SC is a Felony. I don't see a distinction between the felony & misdemeanor charges either, other than the misdemeanor was showing it to someone without their consent, which sounds worse than the felony.

Yep:lol:;)

I think the AMA rejects sex addiction as an actual disease. Meaning your insurance won't pay for your rehab if your wife catches you dogging around. So please make sure you're rich before "contracting" this "disease." As the senate candidate in South Carolina is not rich, my guess is he's gonna do time for his little lewd suggestion on campus. There's always that being-black-while-in-South-Carolina thing, too. Along with the publicity coming along with this case, that's gotta count against him.

I'll bet then we'll find out who bankrolled him running for senate.

The difference between being charged with obscenity and convicted is huge. IIRC, it is one of the hardest charges to prove. The other charge will probably stick.

That's no longer an issue. Stan and Kyle killed the goblin who was responsible for all that.

This is just standard sexual harassment.

I am sure an action figure of him would be a collectible. Especially after this incident.

:eek:Yes, the Federal government isn't the only government level that creates legislature.

Note that different states even legislate different tax rates.

In North Carolina if a married man has an affair then the wife can sue the other woman for alienation of affection which is what's happening to a former american idol winner.
