Silver disabled?

With only a couple games under my belt, I had never tried to mine silver because it wasn't convenient until my current game. So now I try to mine the stuff. I put a mine on the hill and a expert silver miner to work it in the right city square.

All I get is ore?

Is silver mining broken or disabled? Do I need another component? Does the silver have to be on a certain terrain besides just hills? (ie: desert or tundra)

I went to considerable expense to get that little town going that could have been spent on another resource tactic. The town isn't exactly in a great spot for growth and I don't need more plain ore, much less to haul it back to sell.

If this is a bust then I've got a gamesave further back I'll reload from and go chase furs instead.

I'm not sure you can mine silver from all hills, perhaps any hills. Isn't it mountains?

Did you try right clicking the specialist and choosing to mine silver instead?

I don't have any problem mining silver. I just put a silver miner on the silver ore deposit in my colony screen and he does his thing.

There is a silver deposit where you are trying to mine it isn't there, JuntaJoe?

There's a mine, silver miner, and silver deposit there.

But tour86rocker called it right. Since I didn't want to trash all that time and effort I decided to poke into the World Builder. Somehow the game put silver on a hill. But silver comes from mountains only. One change to mountains in the WB and silver showed up in the city screen. I suppose it's cheating fixing it with the WB, but the game goofed first and I sunk some real effort getting that inland town going.

I'll be watching future random maps for this topology resource mistake.

I'll screenshot it if I see it again for posterity in case Firaxis ever decides they want to patch things.

Thanks for the help!

The silver deposit should provide silver in its own right. Silver deposits don't appear on peaks, only hills (to my knowledge), but peaks produce silver by themselves and hills don't. In lieu of a saved game, I can't tell you what went wrong here but are you absolutely sure you didn't overlook anything? You didn't miss the opportunity to assign the miner as a silver miner rather than an ore miner, or perhaps mistake an iron deposit for silver?

Definitely an expert silver miner on a hill with white ore (not black) and mine.

Even in the city screen it only showed regular ore and not the silver icon. The icon shapes are distinctively different. When I tried to assign the miner it only game me ore miner option. Silver mining didn't make the list.

Yea, I guess I should have screenshotted it all, but after seeing the lack of participation by the Firaxis crew I felt collecting evidence would be a waste of effort to bring attention to the bug.

It's not a bug.

Silver (the yield) is only possible on peaks.
Silver (the bonus) is only possible on tundra/snow hills.

This is according to the XML file.

During testing silver (the yield) was available on hills and peaks but we found that silver was then waaaaaaaaaay tooooooo abundant and it was changed to peaks only.
