I am about to play my first multi player game over a LAN and I noticed the option to play simultaneous moves. This seems like a good idea as it will speed up play.

However, how does combat work? Does it matter who actually moves their units first or is it all evaluated at the end of the turn?

Also, what's the time limit for?

What are the requirements to start a LAN game? My brother and I would like to play a LAN game simultaneously. We have 2 computers. Do we need phone cords, cables, etc?

You'll need two network interface cards (standard hardware on any computers bought the last 5 years) and a hub/switch to connect them (and network cables (RJ45) from your computers to the hub/switch).

Actually all you need is 2 network cards and a crossover cable. You don't need a hub/switch for connecting just 2 computers.. they are only for connecting more than 2. Just search on google for "home network" for more info.
Although i think there's not much point in doing it just for civ3... civ3's multiplayer is crap ... too much lag, even on a LAN. It takes like 3 secs to move just 1 unit.

Simultaneous moves is a must have option - All the human players move there units at the same time it means you just need to make sure you move important units first, eg like getting that settler to the iron before anyone else.

The time limit is to stop someone from holding up the game if they are going to the bog (although there is pausing). If you are playing with mates or family dont bother with the timer.

I am sure you guys get this ever once in a while as it seems to be the most unanswerable tech question found in any Civ3 forum.

In a LAN (or internet) game, is there anyway to increase or disable the time-out feature that displays "waiting for player" and has a 60 second counter. At 30 seconds the "drop player" button appears. We have never been able to finish a game due to this timer. I have tried every tip listed in every popular forum to avoid this problem: Small maps, turn off animations, update all drivers, kill background processes, disable unused services, add memory, buy a faster computer, buy a faster NIC, you name it... I have done it. We have run this game on two systems used for drag racing and no matter how fast the system cpu, LAN speed still... the problem sits there like an angry blister.

The only solution I can see is actually increasing the value of the lag out timer, or disabling it completely.

So, how do I do that?
