Following discussion in another thread, I decided to try a standard game (ie not OCC) in which I would only ever have one city. To try it out, I dropped down to Warlord level and chose a philosophical, spiritual leader (Ghandi). This gave me a boost on great people and free civic changes. Everything else was more or less random - ie I didn't choose oponents or redraw the map. As luck would have it, my country was the Netherlands, which gave a real production bonus via their UB (the dyke). For early wonders, I picked up the Oracle (metal casting as free tech), the pyramids and the colossus. I built the great library around AD 600. I used a great engineer to build the Shewdagon Paya (probably a mistake since I only had 1 temple and 1 monastery.)
I more or less maintained a tech lead as soon as tech trading kicked in. I was DoW'd twice. The first time I bribed my neighbour (Stalin) to join the war and never saw an enemy unit. The second time, Elizabeth tried a small amphibious assault which was not a success. Her destroyers blocked my food from the sea until I launched the spaceship and could build some cruisers to attack them.
At its best, my bpt was around 750. My research rate was 100% throughout and since I founded Confucianism, I never had any money problems. I bought lots of resources from the AI - the going rate appeared to by 6 per turn for any non-strategic resource. My production peaked at around 150. I had no aluminium and was too far north to build the space elevator. Without these, production of ship parts could not keep up with research. I eventually launched with only 1 engine and 1 thruster. Building any more would have taken longer than the journey time they saved.
It was an interesting exercise; I'll probably go up a level and try again.
