slavery vs citizen specialization

The next hot thing in my games is slavery. Nothing better to whip otherwise unhealthy or angry citizens into buildings or units every 10 turns. I rarely notice a happiness penalty. Rightclick city and whip 2 pop for a knight and a bit of production overflow into the next unit or building.

What do you do to halt growth? Slavery or assign a specialist? (or something else)
 
Slavery has its place, esp as I often end up in it for most of the game. Rushing culture buildings to grab a river delta. Lots of flood-plains, lots of green faces really fast...
 
I don't usually use it but you could press the halt population growth button in your city.
