Citizens,

I bring forth to you a matter of concern. Our current funding of research, taxation and luxuries.

Our current path is that of minimalistic research. We're not exactly at the front of the pack in technology.

Let's change that. Let's become aggressive in our research, and charge to the front of technology. This isn't Diety, we are at a level where we can take charge of technology, NOW. Use that to build up our cash reserves.

Let's start building libraries in cities with high commerce. Let's push the Governors and the MIA (me!) to build libraries in high commerce cities, and rush build them. Let's push the Senate to adopt a more aggressive slider setting.

We are the French, after all. Should we dare let a foreign, uncouth civ actually be more advanced that us? No, I say! No! We must take our rightful place in the world - looking down our noses at everyone else!

We could be getting Chivalry next turn only if we had increased science at the start of this past turnchat. I think we have enough cities now (and our cities are large enough) that we can start to support research.

IMHO we should NOT spend money on research now (not even 10%), because success is not assured and the AIs will not yet pay huge amounts of money for techs. Being the only one having contacts to both continents we are in the ideal broker position and for now should use our money for luxury to get maximum growth and productivity from our cities.

The main alternatives are
  • to decide on the military way, upgrade our horsemen, build knights and conquer our continent, maybe also Egypt, or
  • to concentrate on infrastructure, i.e. libraries, markets, universities and then start researching[/list=a]
The advantage of the military way is that we may claim one or more of the Middle Age Wonders by Great Leaders. Otherwise our chances are very very slim.

BTW: the English are out somewhere and we should look for them, probably in the southwest.

tao: there are several aspects to the DemoGame.
You are focussing mainly on 1 aspect: to play perfectly, or at least as perfectly as possible.
Ravensfire's suggestion addresses a different aspect of the game; a kinda RPG-induced strategy. French are proud and dismissive of other nations. They choose their own path and want to be the best. We the French (or Fanatikans if you prefer that term) should not learn from inferior nations; we are the smartest in the world. Let's prove that by become tech-leader !!

Raven: sounds ok. But a bit premature. Why not wait what the
Manifest discussion shows ?

Tao - we already found them. We just need another galley. ;)

But, we *ARE* more than capible of doing our own research. I've never had to go to 0-10% science as a commercial (and industrious!) civ on monarch.

'Tis fine with me - I didn't see that when I posted this.

Yes, you are right and I agree. The point I am asking is whether we want to do it. We can for now do very very well by just brokering techs. The huge blunder we made was not building enough horsemen to upgrade with our cash. But still: are we in a hurry to increase the tech pace? I don't see any reason. Thus it is a matter of taste.

De gustibus non est disputandum. :D

PS: I always keep my citizens busy; no clowns, extremely few "specialists". Spend cash for lux.

"in matters of taste, there are no judges" (at least, that what one website said it was. Latin).

Rather cool, and appropriate quote.
