the farther I advance the slower the system goes to the point where I can click "end turn" and go fix a cup of coffee ,some popcorn ,use the bathroom and sometimes it just freezes up and takes FOREVER to close the game.

That is really irritating.

I found that BtS made things a lot faster, but I never play maps bigger than standard.

Smaller maps, and lower your graphics settings.

Sounds like the computer just can't handle the game.
