[Col] SM Colonization (original) now available on GOG.com for $5.99 DRM FREE!

TY for the tip. Didn't know the site. But found a few games I loved to play but couldnt anymore because they weren't compatable with vista. And now they are so I downloaded a few already. :)

Oh, the game where tobacco is more expensive than gold is reborn!

Good Old Games has a huge selection of classic games including Colonization, Ulitima 1 thru 8, Kings Bounty, Master of Orion 1, 2 and 3, Might & Magic VI to IX, Betrayal at Krondor, HOMM 1 to 4 and my all time favourite game Master of Magic. Mostly at $5.99 and as Maniacal said, DRM free.

Man have I spent some hours playing those games in the past :)

This game pretty much nailed what a Civ games is about. You begin with a ship, a soldier and a pioneer and are then free to whatever you want.

Almost every founding father is powerful and some might say that guys like Peter Minuit is OP'd, but in a single player game it just adds extra spice. Same goes with FoY.

Combat is simple and mostly luck based. The only way to be sure to win the battle is to get more units than the opponent. And to get many units, you need farmers, fishermen, preachers, statemen, carpenters, lumberjacks, gunsmiths, blacksmiths and ore miners.

There are a few things that I hate with the game though:

- Naval combat is actually broken. In my last game, an enemy Frigate SUNK five of my attacking Frigates in a row. Reason? Because he only had one and I hade like ...20. This is no joke. The odds of a ship being sunken increases if you have more of them, which means that there really is no point in having 50 Frigates.

- Colony and population limit ruins some of the fun. You won't get pleased when you wasted 30 turns at building a Frigate and then game says "A unit cannot be created because the maximum number of units have been reached". I realised that it was necessary to have a limit, but perhaps they could have included an option to change the number in a config file.

- The AI get "free units" when you wipe them out. You take every colony, and suddenly a brand new Frigate shows up and drops off four veteran dragoons at a mountain. This will happen again and again and is really frustrating because after a while they create a carpet of doom. It's like the game says "Oh darn it, he's getting to powerful! Quick, let's give the AI some free units to mess with him.

But anyway, a very underrated Civ game. I'm actually playing it right now and I'm considering declaring independence soon. :)

Is the original music there?

If so, I buy it just for that! :)

Just a bit cautious here, but the text informing about the games seems a little bit out of order..:"Ultimaâ„¢ 4: Quest of the Avatar"

Lots of them like that, I wouldn't buy a game from that site until it's confirmed, eg, someone spend the normal fee of 5.99 for EVERY really old game and 9.00 for EVERY not so old games.
And confirm after that the game actually works.

They might just send us the dosbox version and then say tough luck!

*most of the Dosbox versions are free now, but you have to use the program Dosbox, to convert graphics and stuff to play it.*

Why I'm rambling on here is that I saw Simon the Sorceror on the list. That game is totally forbidden on all abandonsites, as they never gave permission to use it as Freeware.

If someone have 6 bucks to spare, try the FAV game of your life and tell us your experience.

Then, change creditcard!

Sounds very sus and feels like it.

I bought and played Might & Magic VII on Windows 7 at 1920x1080 resolution. It loaded and ran immediately with no dramas even though it is a 12 year old game. The game play was familiar as I have played it many times in the past and I couldn't fault the GOG version. At $6 I considered that a good buy.

I also bought Betrayal at Krondor for $6. That is an even older game but it loaded down fine and started up OK, however I have never played this game before so can't compare it with past experience. I realise I could have downloaded it for free elsewhere but I would also have needed DosBox and that is not always easy to set up. At that price I'm happy to let someone else do the work for me.

From what I understood is that they release games only if they original producer (or current IP owner) okays it, so your worries for Simon should be unfounded.

As for dosbox, I believe their games have a custom dosbox built in, so that you'll never have to configure anything, you can just run it like a modern game.

I've never heard of a game from GoG.com not working (at all that is, I'm sure they have an inbox full of customer who have problems, like any game distributor does)

I'll second this, GOG.com is legit and they do sign deals with the owners of the software to distribute it. While some of the games maybe available for free as abandonware, GOG does make an effort to package everything to run on at least XP. Most stuff runs on Win 7 as well. I've bought several games from them over the last few years and not had any problems. They usually have rounded up extra goodies (manuals, art, soundtracks, etc) that come with the purchase.

GOG also give you seven free games to try out when you sign up. Most are pretty elementary games but two of them were very highly rated when they came out (Ultima IV & Beneath a Steel Sky). They are rather dated now of course but, hey, a free game is a free game :)

GOG are currently running a sales promotion where they put two similar games up against each other and call for votes. The winner gets 60% off the list price while the loser is 40% off. You have to get in quick though, each vote runs for a day then the two games are on sale for a day. The promotion lasts until July 5th.

For the month of December it was $2.99

In fact (I'm at the page now) as of today 1/1/13 it's still 2.99 as it's usually $6.
