There's a lot of posts on big things to do, like XP farming or allying maritime city-states. But what are some of the small tricks you've found?
Building roads in someone else's territory means you don't pay maintenance. If you have a city near a city-state, you can build the road to it through that city-state to cut maintenance costs.
Civilizations will pay money for your open borders (just yours, not mutual). They will also buy strategic resources even if they don't really need them.
