Yeah I did mean to type "Waka" which I do indeed think will be the UU since it was prominently shown in the trailer. And yeah the more I think about it we would already start the game with a Maori Warrior as the default anyway.
A Maori Battalion would work if they did indeed do a New Zealand Civ.

Canada has a more modern leader, so I would expect architecture in their backdrop. Inca I would expect Machu Picchu in the background.

Process of elimination, I would say the Maori...and I really hope it's the Maori, as I can't wait to hear about their stats.

Talking with my fellow kiwi colleagues here, completely serious ideas follow:

    "How about laser-eye shooting Kiwis?"

"In the later ages barbarians could be replaced by freedom campers pillaging your public amenities"

"If someone settles another city too close to yours, you instantly obtain all of the coast/foreshore tiles"

"If a French spy completes a mission successfully in a Maori city, one of the Maori boats instantly sinks and a nuclear power plant is insta-built in the city"

"As soon as America completes their first Film Studio unique building, the Maori civ gets renamed to Middle Earth and their units become Uruk-Hai. A mini game automatically starts where you have to get 2 hobbit units to a random Volcano located on the other side of the map, evading the Maori Uruk-Hai on the way"
..."you think you have made it and then an actors union picket line blocks you, you can only get around it by temporarily reverting your government back to oligarchy or merchant republic"

Is there anything about the picture that rules Machu Picchu out?

We can't exactly see enough of it to say Machu Picchu isn't on it. :p

If it does turn out to be the Inca, that will prove the globe was just an interesting coincidence in regards to Hungary.

I'm not entirely convinced either way. The scenery looks more Inca to me, but other clues, including the globe, do point to the Maori. I guess we'll see tomorrow.

It can be seen from the other way round, however. I think a similar photo has ben posted already, but if you want more, you only need to Google "Machu Picchu from Huayna Picchu".

    Spoiler :

Btw, that mountain seems to be actually Macchu Picchu itself (the peak, not the village). This could be more tan enough to consider it a difficult / subtle, yet straightforward hint. I'm leaning a bit more towards the Inca now. Also, after a newcomer, its time for an old civ...

    Spoiler :

The only thing is I would expect they would explain a bit more about which improvements can be built in mointains with the inca, and I think we are not ready yet for that.

It's the Maori. The mountain range depicted is way similar in both form and vegetation to the mountains found in New Zealand than those in the Andes. The former have a distinct curve that makes it rememble a wave, and so does that mountain shown in the teaser.

They're not going to show the whole backdrop, just a snippet of it. We can't say from this image that there isn't architecture in the backdrop.

But I do believe it's Maori. I've been to Peru and this doesn't "feel" like a snippet from a Peruvian background. It does feel like New Zealand to me.

Has anyone considered it might be Tamar of Georgia? :mischief:
