Dear Firaxis,

I'm someone who, from your first look video, isn't going to play much if any Civ 7. I won't go into specifics, there are plenty of other threads for that.

What I really wanted to say is a genuine thank you for the editions of Civ that have been for me. I've played them all since Civ 2; but 4 and 6 in particular were close to being so exactly what I wanted that I sunk thousands of hours into them, loving every turn! Sure, they had their flaws, but the great well outweighed the bad.

So Civ 7 might be less for me and more for a different kind of Civ player, and I'm going to be happy for them. It's a bold move, and I hope it pays off for you all.

Kind regards
Jonny Newcombe

Hey man, I bet 5 dollars you’d gonna end up buying it. Maybe not at launch, but 5 months in when that sweet Summer Sale makes it 35% off? Yeah, easy. You might stick with the mode that removes the civ-changing mechanic, but you’ll be there.

Personally, I think this reaction is a bit premature. So you have already dismissed civ7 completely, months before the release, based on just the first day of gameplay reveal? There is still a lot about civ7 that we don't know yet. What if we learn new stuff about civ7 that changes your mind?

I think the core changes are too strong to be surmounted for some of us. Which is okay! Other people will be able to enjoy these changes in a way that we wouldn't.

Yes, which is a shame, considering I like so much more of the other changes. The graphics of the map including districts blending well with the cities, city-states evolving from minor powers, unique civics for every civ etc.

To be honest, to write the game off (and vice versa, to pre-order) is a bit soon. We know some details, but we don't know how they're implemented...or if it's enjoyable. I definitely get not pre-ordering it (which is sage advice regardless), but saying it couldn't be fun is premature really.

From what we've seen so far it feels more like Civ 6.5 rather than 7, so I won't be taking the plunge straight away.

Will probably end up caving in and buying it eventually, but certainly won't be paying £59.99 here in the UK. Plus the pricing structure of the Deluxe & Founders Editions has all the hallmarks of Total War Pharaoh about it.:egypt:👎

Are you sure? Take another look. From what I've seen so far, it has rather very little to do with Civ 6. To me, it looks like a reset of the franchize 😀 Enough to become interested again.

But I'll wait and see. I remember the first 60 turns played of Civ 6 video by Quill18. It turned out, that remained the best 60 turns of the game to this point, well, give or take. This game looks so much promising again, the shake-up is to quite a large extent. But I want to see much more of the gameplay, and also AI in action.

As I said in the OP I'm not getting into specifics here. Having played this game very enthusiastically for almost 30 years now I think I've got a fair idea of what drives me to take one more turn, or not.

I'm reminded of that one thread from dog ages ago, where a user had such a bad first impression Civ 4, that they destroyed the disc in some overly dramatic fashion and re-installed Civ 3

I actually did struggle a little with Civ 4 to begin with, but it wasn't the fundamental building blocks of that edition, and they changed some of those things.

I didn't say it couldn't be fun.

You say 6.5, I'll say 8 ;)

Cue to people like me that purchased Civ6 and all of its DLCs despite sticking mostly with Civ4, Civ4Col and CivBE...

Why did I purchase it? No idea, each time I'd launch it with the hopes that this time the game would "click" for me, maybe this mod or that mod... but it never did. And I kept purchasing anyway like the good little hopeful dullard I am. Well, at least it sated my curiosity.

If you got into some specifics, it might help us understand where you are coming from. I won't argue or judge you. Heck, if you say that the civ switching mechanic each era is a deal breaker for you, you certainly would not be alone in that feeling. Lots of civ fans seem very upset with that change. I just find it a bit odd after just one gameplay reveal, months before the game is released, to decide that you will never play the game. After all, there is so much about civ7 that we still don't know. We only saw a tiny part of gameplay yesterday. How can you already know that the game is not for you when you've only seen a small part of the game and have not even played the game yet? But you are certainly entitled to your feelings of course.

I'm not them, but this defeats the entire purpose of the game for me, which is why that announcement alone is enough to make me feel confident that I won't play it.

If I want to play something more realistic with prior culture/empire transitions, I can play a paradox game. They will do it much better, with more realistic context and transitions. In fact, I often do/did.

With Civ, I wanted to build a single entity up using the civilization I chose as the theme for how I engaged. I wanted to build an Empire that stands the test of time. With the civ I'm effectively playing as forcibly changed, I don't have that option. I can no longer start as England, France, Japan, or America. I can no longer finish as the Aztecs, Romans, or Mongolians.

Again, I want to reiterate that it's okay. Many will probably like this system. It's just not something that works for me, so I won't play it.

There are lots of other threads for that. My OP isn't snark or sarcasm. It's a genuine honest thank you to Firaxis for the editions I have loved. It's easy to always want and advocate for the kind of Civ game that we like, but it's reasonable to also recognise that others will love something we don't.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. Having played Civ since the original back in 1991 I feel this is where I'm going to be bowing out of the franchise. We all have our reasons why we play and enjoy these games. I always played as a single civilization. Thousands of hours spent across over three decades always playing as Poland (except the very first game, which I played as America, because I hadn't figured out how to customize my civ yet). I have no interest in nor the desire to ever play anything but my culture. If that is taken away from me, Civilization is dead to me as a game. It may be a very myopic view, but ultimately, it's down to my own enjoyment.

That said, this series has given me so much fun, satisfaction, thrill, and happiness that I have zero issues with them going in a different direction. It's fine. Games need to change and evolve. If Civilization gains more players as a result, then I am all for it.

Some things never change. That was me when Civ5 came out lol. But then I played Civ6, and somehow I enjoyed the even-number Civ games more than the odd-numbered ones.

@nzcamel you gotta wait for Civ8 haha

As someone who pre-ordered Civ 6 Deluxe edition, and had expected to do the same for Civ 7, I've definitely gone from "pre-order" to meh.

The civ switching is honestly not make or break for me, but watching the let's plays has made me even less optimistic: the myriad of bonuses with the "sameness", lots policy card switching (including the crisises), random events (good huts being like "do you want 10 science or 10 culture"?), influence as a currency for dealing with other Civs, the "legacy system" looking like some scenario score victory system with random collect X goals. It's absolutely giving me Humankind vibes, and I found Humankind super boring. I don't want a Civ that's more like a Paradox/Grand Strategy game, which is the vibes the first looks have given me.

I'm certainly taking the wait-and-see approach, but the more I've seen so far, the more my interested has waned in even seeing more, so I suspect I'll turn into more of a wait and check back after launch approach.

Luxuries? Naw.

Yep. There has been something disastrous about odd numbered sequels of Civ.

Civ VIII will be great. 👍
