So Im playing a large game as the Dutch, having plenty of fun with spies and as usually fighting the Aztecs and Mayans ( they seems to always have it in for me )

My mate Ragnar has been chummy with me since we started on the same continent. I considered war with him to have my own island, but suddenly the Aztecs and Mayans go at me like bulls out of the gate. It has taken me most of the game to get them down, now they my vassals...
Ragnar is pretty much my best mate, he adopted my religion and regulary trades with me, his army is large, but he keeps it under control.

However Ragnar joined in my war at one point, sending gallons by the bucket load fulled with units to claim a few cites.

I had a few ships blocking trade around the Aztec island. Suddenly Ragnars ships thru themselves at my Frigates, he thru 8 gallons at a pair of frigates.

-no war was declared
-no war occured due to the attack
-my ships survived and killed all of his
-next turn he offered me a tech and some money in a trade.
-he continues to be a very strong friend

What in gods names happened there?

Privateers. they bear no nationality makings and the AI knows how to use them. Just make sure you're ahead in naval tech and you'll be fine.

Only thing I can think of is if they were privateers which you say they weren't... do you know what civs they were at war with at the time?

See I thought it might have been privateers, however they were ragnars purple colours and carried his symbol...

They were a series of gallons, I should have taken a screenshot, I couldnt remember what button it was to take them.

It might happen again, my game still has a little way to go.

It felt like I had stumbled on a bug

Maybe your ship's a privateer. That's also reasonable, too. Everyone will attack priveteers, it's considered an enemy to all.

Most likely what happened. Was there a privateer in your stack? If so that was the ship that ragnar was attacking.

Even though you know the privateer is yours and your ships can occupy the same space, your ships will not defend them.

I'm betting you had a privateer in your stack also. I can't tell you how many fleets I've destroyed by parking privateers outside of another AI's cities.
