Hello everybody,

I just wanted to share my latest experience at BNW.

I am not a very skilled player, and I didn't even play above prince in vanilla and G and K.

But I am very motivated to improve with BNW, so for my first serious game (at prince lvl, epic duration) i choose Poland, because i read here that they are very powerful.

So i span at the center of a big continent (I think so far) with Russia to my right, washinghton at the bottom and the Incas at my left.
Germany and Ethiopia a bit far away, and Japan later on.

So I basically think i am screwed because if I'm not mistaken, these are the most agressive/expansive civs ?

So i try to be friend with them, and i got a lot of declaration of friendship.
But washington betrayed me, DOW.
I manage to save my cities, and we make peace a few turns later.

Then i decided to be a little more cautious and built more units to defend myself.

Russia also betrayed me although we just made a declaration of friendship 2 turns ago.
As i am busy dealing with them, USA came back and DOW me again.

I ragequit

Atlhough I would love to see what I have done wrong, so please find the save attached, I am eager to improve, so what I have done wrong ?

I think a lot of the complaints are about the lack of early game wars. You want your warmonger neighbor to be at your borders before you can even reach the classical era (construction tech).

I feel Poland's UA takes a massive dip in usefulness when you go longer than standard pace

Yeah sorry <i didn't mention that, the first DOW from Whashington was around the beginning of medieval era.

Just been subjected to the early DoW by Atilla there. So many units in so little time. My position was strong enough to defend from (hill/river/castle), but my archers were weak and it took a long time to fend him off. I should have changed tech to construction, but I ploughed on towards education and still built my guilds so as not to delay with tourism. Big mistake though, as two turns after asking me to help him against the Shoshone, Nobunaga pounces on me, which was only one turn after I'd killed the last Hun unit. I am not going to fend him off with archers, and they'll all be dead before I can put three turns into researching construction.

Lesson learned - always deal with the here and now.

Some thoughs "what could be done different", even thou not sure if better:

- Wroclaw location, seems to be little odd, and "side" from your Empire, so you are putting city between Russia and US. And this city isnt particulary valuable, no extra resources, just some desert. Interesting location would be left top, seaside, river near Inca, which would make your empire more together.
- You seem to really dislike building granaries. Is there a reason for that? Generally granary is good 4th building (like monuments, shrine, granary, library, market, watermill)
- You have very weak army. :-( Composite bowmen are great, just have one in each city, and few mores loose + spears. You anyway have garrison free. It would be even better if you can dedicate one of high production cities for barracks, and producing army with upgrade ready.
- I personally prefer to dedicate another city than capital for guild hub. Capital specialist are better spend on scientiscs.
- You seem to dislike roads, and caravans. You need more of them.
- Im not sure about Great LIbrary, it is not as great. Having more small ones and national colage would be better. If you catch Great Library you would as well catch Hanging Gardens and that would be more beneficial. Since you have tradicion, capital pop gives you a bit of everything.
- There is no point in developing technology if you not gonna use it soon. Construction for composite bowmen is good, but Iron Working... what for, it is not like you have swordsman. I suppose that it would be better to head on to Education, and then move back to bottom, for stuff like lanning tower. With universities it would be faster anyway.

I have never played a game where Washington didn't betray me if he got the chance. Germany always attacks, but Washington always friends me first.

If it was Alex you would get your ass kicked faster. I find russia pretty easy to deal with. If you want to never get bullied, be the leader on the army size at all time, so you can turtle how much you like...or you can simple dominate everyone.
