Some Civ 5 Annoyances...

First, I'd like to say I absolutely love the game. The combat... the graphics... the music... the look and feel of the interface... lots of good stuff. I also understand the game was just released and will likely need some patches and future expansions to fix/enhance some things.

But regardless, here is a list of some things I find rather pesky and annoying and I'm curious to see how others feel and if they have some of their own they'd like to share. Hopefully Firaxis can address some of these things.

01) Steam. (lol, sorry... had to say it)

02) The cinematic plays at EVERY launch after the initial one. Not only that, but I have to hit Enter or Esc like 5 times before it goes away! (To fix: Go to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5 and in file usersettings.ini set SkipIntroVideo = 1. Thanks, Gkey!)

03) Sometimes clicking the icon on my desktop and waiting forever for the Steam dialog box that says, “Launching Civ V”. Thankfully, it doesn't happen that often.

04) The legal mumbo jumbo stuff at the beginning of every launch that I have to click “Continue” to before accessing the main menu. Is it necessary? Many other high-quality games from some big-name companies don't do this.

05) Saving the game and not having a default file name available. I have to click an existing file, click on the file name field, press End, press Delete, and then type the next number (Like Japan 06, Japan 07, etc.). It should come with a default name that is already highlighted in case you want to name it something more descriptive like, “Just researched Gunpowder”.

06) Incomplete Civilopedia; brief descriptions and no links. Sometimes only text with no graphics or symbols. Seems whenever I do a search for legitimate terms (raze, razing, cooperation, secrecy, etc.) it doesn’t know what I’m talking about.

07) Quirky production queue system. It's a shame simple Shift-clicking and Ctrl-clicking aren't implemented.

08) The Tutorial Messages don’t save between game sessions and advisors keep telling you the same things over and over. “Cities can bombard enemies… no way, really!? Thanks again Mr. Military Advisor, I almost forgot!” (Yeah, I know I can disable them, but I'll only do that once I have a good grasp of the game.)

09) No “Check for Updates” button within the game menu. I heard there was an update released, yet it wasn't installed on mine and I can't find it. /shrug

10) The quick save hotkey (F11) is right next to the quick load hotkey (F12). I already once loaded by accident and lost some turns.

11) Rivers are f-ugly as hell. I don’t mind the “painted” look of the terrain (I like it) or that trees don’t sway and stuff (which isn’t necessary and eats up memory) but rivers look like total crap, ESPECIALLY when they run into the ocean. Ice looks crappy too and sometimes just looks out of place and overlaps the terrain.

12) There isn't a column for Great Person Points within the city overview screen to compare cities.

13) Trying to figure out what the exact numerical health is of enemies without estimating it from the health bar - am I missing something?

14) Montezuma’s leader diplomacy graphics. Looks awesome, but a bit over the top and gobbles up memory.

15) Right clicking off spammy message bubbles on the right side of the interface and accidentally queuing up movement for a unit across the screen – doh!

16) Hover-over info box (or whatever you call it) on buildings doesn't display any info on how many specialists it provides or what kind. Also, the civilopedia just shows 1 specialist for many of the buildings when they in fact provide 2. Yes, it COULD only be stating the type of specialist the building creates (though I doubt it)... but how hard would it have been to just copy the specialist icon over again for clarity?

17) Food resources are strange (except for Wheat). A farm can usually provide the same bonus as a camp or plantation, yet the farm will eventually be BETTER once Civil Service/Fertilization is researched.

18) Game info for the Factory is incomplete. All it states is its requiremnt of 1 Coal.

19) When using one of the very useful hotkeys, "R" (to toggle resource icon displays, because I hate leaving it on all the time), if you don't notice you have a worker selected you'll build a road by accident and may waste a worker turn. This happens to me a lot. Perhaps, roads should be be on a different hotkey.

20) Alt-tabbing to the desktop or another application seems to be a real pain while playing. Not sure why. (I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit)

21) Not being able to see what kind of buildings/wonders the puppet cities contain. Not being able to see where their next bonus tile will be thru culture.

22) Puppet cities using up your resources for their buildings!! You also can't view these puppet cities so you're not exactly sure which ones built it. They should only focus on population increasing buildings and science ones, commerce buildings, and culture... and nothing that requires a resource. (Example: I all of a sudden didn't have any more coal and couldn't build a Factory in another potential production city. I eventually realized that the puppets were used it all up on their crappy cities that don't even produce units or wonders none the less!)

23) Queued movement paths. Seems to happen with workers a lot for me. They'll stop all of a sudden because their path is blocked or something. That, or maybe I click on them by accident. Anyway, I'm left wondering where the heck he was going because there's no preview of the path the unit was going to take (like in Civ 4 when you selected it).

24) Canceling a movement path. Sometimes you'll go to click on something or scroll somewhere and somehow in some way you have a worker or some other unit selected with a queued path ready to go. You can't hit Esc to cancel it because it just brings up the menu. You have to either follow the dashed path back to the unit or look for the blinking dot on the mini map. And if you DO accidentally move the unit... boy does that suck. Now you have to try and find it or you have many wasted turns of it moving to some random location. Perhaps it's not a problem if you're using the "M" hotkey for movement since that actually toggles. But I have the habit of just holding down the right mouse button for movement.

25) No option for workers to auto improve the nearest city. If you have a big empire your workers may keep going back and forth across your territory or the ocean and get themselves killed by enemy ships in the process. You're stuck building improvements manually.

26) No information on what improvements can be built on a tile before you have a worker there.

27) Within the city overview screen (Economy Overview?) the science column doesn't sort correctly.

28) Again, with regards to the city overview screen... when clicking on columns to sort, in my opinion, it should sort out in descending order (highest up top) on the first click instead of its current form. More often, I'm looking for my biggest production cities, biggest commerce city, etc. not the crappiest one.

Any others?

I'll agree to most of that. Two others that I've encountered are:
  • The UI for selecting production queues is really awkward and possibly broken. I can't actually figure out how to remove things from my queue once I've added them, but this might be because I am not that smart. Even so, it is really awkward and I want SHIFT-CLICK to add.
  • Non-strategic, non-luxury resources hurt you. Building a camp on a deer is less good that building a farm on the same tile, sans-deer. As near as I can tell, no other benefit.

There is a small "x" to the right of the unit in the production queue, if you click on it it will delete it from the queue.

I agree on the shift-click. In civ4 I can manipulate the production queue with hotkeys in like 2 seconds. In civ5 I have to mouseclick this and mouse click that... really annoying. Plus when you want to change production after using the production queue, you need to uncheck the production queue box first. Sigh...

1.Combat Statistics
2. Diplomacy Modifiers
3. Annoying Narrator Voice for Civ INTRO!
4. Map Buttons
5. Ability to easily play modded MP Games
6. Ability to easily save MP Games
7. I simply Double-Click Civ4 BTS or whatever Mod Shortcut I have and BOOM! Instant mod game. Rather than having to click Steam junk, and EULA agreement Junk and select mods junk, etc.
8. Strength adjusted according to damage in Civ4, now in Civ5 I have to guess what my actual Strength is and what my HP are.
etc. etc.

9. Inability to change default XML files and save the game and reload it. You'll get a message saying: "Currently enabled mods are not compatible with this saved game"

10. In Civ V, you can mouse over another unit and see it's Strength, but you'll be unable to tell what it's HP is. Annoying.

11. The Strategic Map forces you to look at the units, improvements, and resources. In Civ4 you could pick and choose which effects you wanted to see; not just some. Annoying.

12. In Civ4 when moving a worker, you could know by holding down the right-click mouse button what you could build in the tile. That feature is noticeably absent here.

13. Civ4 had a ton of custom game options. I see hardly any such options here.

14. Civ4 had Combat 1. Now we have Shock and Drill. Now I have to pay attention to what little tile my opponent is under to figure out what promotion I want to get; not fun.

15. In Civ4 I knew the combat Percentages with another unit before starting a war. Now, I have to declare a war and then I can find out if the combat odds were such that starting a war was justified.

If I understand you correctly, you can in fact filter what you want to see within the strategic view.

Just click the button above the button that toggles the strategic view. There you have many options to filter what you see. VERY VERY helpful... I love it.

I use it a lot to get an outlook of the battlefield during war or to find unimproved tiles within my territory once almost all the tiles are improved. I also usually use the diplomatic boundaries (or whatever it's called) underlay when looking at both of those so that it shows my civ's colors underneath my tiles.

:goodjob:

Yeah, I miss the clock and the alarm clock feature.

Maybe they knew that nobody would be so involved with the game like Civ IV so they never bothered to incorperate it into the game.

*shrugs*.

The cinematic plays while the game is loading. You can hit all the keys you like, but nothing will happen until loading is complete. I don't have a problem with that, but I'd like to at least see a progress bar or something so I know when it's ready!

13) Trying to figure out what the exact numerical health is of enemies without estimating it from the health bar - am I missing something?
Yes, you are missing something. I discovered this quite by accident, but if you mouse-over the unit itself (not it's bar or icon) for a couple of seconds, you'll get an additional box appear to the right that tells you the current hp. Works for enemies and own units, but not for cities.

I agree with all your other comments. And another thing that annoys me is the "Choose Production" view of the city... why not just open the city screen for me, so I can see what buildings are there and other useful data that I might want for deciding on the next building?

Another thing is that if I issue a multi-turn move order, I can't seem to find a way to later select the unit and see what his target is, or what path he plans to take.

Last one, that I'm surprised nobody mentioned here, is that the pathfinding algorithm will cut through non-friendly city-states, causing them to get angry at you. I'm pretty sure they'll patch this quickly, but in the meantime it's quite annoying.

You are forced to see resources in the strategic view. Sometimes I don't want to see the Sheep, Gold, Horses, etc. You can't "unsee" these things.

+1
Don't like to be negative, but this post post express my feelings pretty well.
Regarding issue #2.:
go to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5 and in file usersettings.ini set SkipIntroVideo = 1.

There are a lot of little problems and polish issues that I agree with.

Having said that I'm continuously surprised by how many complaints there are about the rivers. I hardly notice such things. I must be weird.

I'd also like to be able to see the city screen for puppets--not modify anything, of course, but just be able to see the information in it.

Better yet, go to the Options and set the tooltip time to zero seconds and it'll pop up immediately.

I hope the next patch adds the corresponding data for cities too.

Also, I don't like that it blocks the tech progress info. There are times when I want to start building something new the same turn it becomes available, so setting things up so that the current build and the tech research finish at the same time is occasionally desirable.

Thanks, buddy! :D

09) No “Check for Updates” button within the game menu. I heard there was an update released, yet it wasn't installed on mine and I can't find it. /shrug

There is no need for this as Steam automatically downloads and installs updates.

In my case, I'm used to seeing how many turns it will be until a unit will be healed when I mouse over "fortify until healed." It is a small thing, but it'd be nice to have that.

Good list.

Not only is there no great person column in the city overview window but the sorting often doesn't work either. I'll click the science icon to sort by science and it changes the order of the cities but it's not remotely sorted correctly.

completely agree with the posted annoyances.
my adds to this list: (would be cool if all the adds in this thread would be copied into the OP for a strong list):

1.)Civ V doesn't remember my custom setup settings like mapsize etc.

2.) No "regenerate map" menu option.
I am often unsatisfied with my starting location and wished there to be this menu option from Civ IV. Now i have to go back to the main menu where I have to completely redo all the setup settings.

3.) Too few customizabilities.
I want to create a completely own civilization , with my own choosen name and traits. This is not possible.

3.1.) Too few possibilities for renaming stuff.
In Civ IV you where asked what the name of your new found city should be, now it's settled predefined.
Also unit naming was possible at anytime and with any unit.

3.2) Customize options are too hidden.
like renaming citys f.e., looks like they where pasted in in a hurry.

4.)Warriors look like Workers.

This is a funkiller.

5.) the back-transparent screen-overlay when scavenging a ruin or getting any note.

this pulls you out of the game for a little.

6.)Barbarians with no Identity.

In Civ IV they where named after diverse historic tribes.

7.)No unit command menu when the movement points are used up.

8.)No cheering when you upgrade your unit.

9.) No era specific Music.
This is completely mooddestroying.
