So I finally decided to play a full game as the US, but before I start I want to see if I can get some helpfull tips on what to do. My game at least gives me some settlers and troops right in the middle of English and French territories in the North American continent where present day Washington D.C is. So can anyone tell me a good way to start? I obviously have to declare war on France and England sometime in the future to drive them out of the US like my historical goal says. Although I'm surprised Spain hasn't made any colonies in the US yet, but I guess the mod can't be that accurate. Thanks for the help! :)

Well you could settle in place, I'd suggest you wait for cities to flip (should take about 3 turns) to you, mostly you should get this way Savannah if it is colonized, new york, and another city in the northern east coast with ease, as well with any troops present in the city.
Hope for England to declare on you right on the turn of the flip, that means that you'll get extra troops and their troops will disappear in America. Remember you have up to 1930 to take care of your first goal so don't neglect the wonders or preparing to expand towards oil sources in the near future.
Also I forgot to mention you should use the first 3 turns to make a large civic change, you should basically switch all your civic categories to something better and once the anarchy is over switch to a state religion too if it fits.
Another useful tip is if you don't want to get into too many wars due to kicking the euro's out of America try to make alliances with lots of civs like Germany or any civ you kicked out of America already to help you win the wars (also if they conquer their home cities in Europe they'll probably collapse which will make it much easier for you to clean up the remaining colonies).

First things first - get those civics changed
Talk to a really undeveloped civ like Mali or the Inca. Chances are you'll have lots of techs they don't have. Trade one of them (in a lot of my games I can trade something really old like philosophy or economics) for the world map - this will tell you who the movers and shakers are, and also tell you who owns what in the Americas.
Hopefully you'll start at war with the power that possessed New York (as soon as that city flips). This will give you extra troops and as BED said, some of their troops will disappear. Taking the copper deposit north of New York quickly is paramount to our UHV. Without it, building the statue of liberty first will not be an easy task.

I find in my games as the USA in the first few turns I am churning out workers to get the central United States developed as quickly as possible. We want Denver, Chicago and New Orleans up and running immediately. Denver's production capability is nothing short of monstrous.

For cities, the places I found I liked the most as USA are:
- Washington
- New York
- Miami (southern tip of Florida)
- Toronto (or Fort Albany/Fort Rupert - Fort Rupert is a favourite, it is on the river, one tile West of the copper)
- Chicago (between the two corn resources)
- New Orleans (North of the fish)
- Denver (directly on the oil)
- Vancouver (Northwest of the marble)
- Los Angeles (South of the cow)
- Reno (settle this one last, and make sure there already is a farm on the rice, and a camp at the deer since otherwise there's no food. This is a good city to get the precious metals East of Vancouver. The spot we should settle here is one tile East of the rice)

If we want to conquer or build more, or maybe try to mimic the USA today, other possibilities include:
- Pearl Harbor
- Anchorage (on the South coast of Alaska. Unfortunately you can only settle directly on the deer, as far as I am aware)
- Saskatoon (In the forests north of Denver. Build it on a river and so it will encompass the oil, deer, and as much forest as possible. If you plan on building the National Park wonder, make sure it is here. You can get a LOT of free specialists by making forest preserves here)

If I am playing single player, I raze all other cities, or if they flipped to me I go into worldbuilder and remove them (such as Boston/Popham/Jacksonville). I don't know if you'd consider it cheating :)

At some point you'll want to start thinking about those sexy oil deposits. We have quite a few near home:
- Northern Alaska
- Saskatoon has an oil deposit
- Denver
- New Orleans
- Gulf of Mexico

Next we'll want to start stealing some oil. Fun places to strike include:
- Caracas (you will likely have to declare war on Spain at some point to kick them out of the Caribbean or Mexico. Why not take their oil, too?)
- Lagos (if someone has settled here, or even if no one has, you could always make yourself at home ;))
- South-West Norway (if the Vikings collapse, we may as well take the easy oil deposit just off their shores)
- Arabia (If we take Baghdad and either settle or capture Kuwait City, we can take over 2 or 3 deposits in one go. Other cities to strike or found include Dubai and Masqat)
- Brunei City (If no one has settled here... we could always invite ourselves in ;))

You start out with a Forge in each city. Switch to Mercantilism for the first part of the game and you can pop out 1 or 2 Great Engineers to help you build your early wonders more quickly.

Build the diamond of powerful Mid West cities - Chicago/New Orleans/Denver as above and Duluth, on the Great Lakes, directly due north of New Orleans. Specialise using local resources: Chicago for specialists (Globe Theatre and perhaps National Park), Denver for hammers (Iron Works and perhaps Heroic Epic, as well as late-game wonders).

UHVs: Conquest is more or less straightforward. It's tough if England has settled the West Coast. As for wonders, Euro civs like to build Statue of Liberty, so get it ASAP. Once you settle North Alaska, you should be able to control all the oil in North America. As well as killerkebab's advice, you can also go for oil in North East Brazil. You can either go for lots of piecemeal colonies around the world or an invasion of Arabia from Soqotra to the Caucausus to take Arab/Iraqi oil. Brunei is usually unsettled.

Thanks for the help guys! =) I'll use all your advice in the game. If I get a chance I'll post in this thred in the future about how I did! Thanks again :D

If you chop any tile that has jungle the AI will colonize Brunei (God knows how many times I made that mistake before I was ready to found it myself due to stability--the Japanese especially love to get their hands on the oil).

Actually, that's not a bad idea for a timed colonization of Brunei and other islands in the Pacific. If resources can appear by time specified in the code, maybe we can change jungle to grassland at a certain time. Any comments Rhye?

No. Does the AI know how to chop jungle outside cultural borders?
No. In the WASP corporation overhaul, some tiles have jungle removed such as Lagos, Manila and Brunei City which means they usually end up settled by Portugal, Japan and Khmer respectively.

Indeed. The best solution in that case is probably dynamic removal.

I agree. It would also help in South America, where we could have the Spanish settle further than Caracas (Bogotá and La Paz should be settled in my opinion, they can be good cities :)), which would make South America less of a barren wasteland in the modern era.
