The lao tribes, related to the tai, arrived from China into Indochina. The lao great emigration happened the XIII century, when they were expelled from China by the Mongols. When they arrived at present-day Laos they mixed with the native population and with the mois from Indonesia, forming small principates. The first notice of the Laosian kingdom was in the XIV century. In the XVI century, Laos was conquered by Burma and recovered its independnce in the next century. The kingdom was weakened by feudal wars and Tai and Annamite invaders, and in the XVIII century it was divided into three: Luang Prabang, Vientiane and Champassak. Siam conquered all three Laosian kingdoms in 1885. French troops first came into the country in 1893.
