Vampire Killing Kit

NEW YORK (AP) - Just in time for Halloween, a vampire-killing kit complete with a wooden stake and 10 silver bullets sold for $12,000 US at auction Thursday.

The kit, a walnut box that also contained a crucifix, a pistol, a rosary and vessels for garlic powder and various serums, was bought by an anonymous phone bidder.

According to Sotheby's, some experts believe that such kits were commonly available to travellers in Eastern Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, while others think the kits were made in the early 20th century, possibly to cash in on interest in vampires sparked by the 1897 publication of Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Elaine Whitmire, head of 19th century furniture for Sotheby's, said she believes the kit was assembled in the early 20th century and sold to travellers as a souvenir.

"My opinion is this is a memento that you bought while you were in Europe," she said. "I doubt it was cheap to buy."

A label on the kit says: "This box contains the items considered necessary for persons who travel into certain little known countries of Eastern Europe where the populace are plagued with a particular manifestation of evil known as Vampires."

The vampire killing kit was part of Sotheby's sale of 19th century furniture and decorative works of art.

The auction house did not identify the seller of the kit. The price includes Sotheby's auction house's commission.

Why would you spend $12,000 on a Vampire Killing Kit, even if it is an antique, why would you want one? Unless you are afraid that Dracula will come to get you in the middle of the night.

My wooden stake is far superior. I made it from the trunk of a small tree I cut down in my backyard.

Haven't had a vampire come near me since.

You'd be surprised. I saw a whole bunch of them out today.

It's sad how many were kids. You gotta protect your children or things like that will happen to them.

The same reason to buy any other antique (mostly what Wombat said and to get self-satisfaction). Not to mention that it's an interesting conversation piece. It can also be useful against annoying door-to-door salesmen:

*salesman comes over*
"Oh, wait a sec, let me go get something..."
*bring vampire kit, open it and get out stake and garlic*
"What are you doing?"
"Guarding myself against vampires, just in case. You aren't a vampire, are you?"
"It's daytime. And I'm not dead."
"You obviously don't know about vampires, do you?"
"And aren't silver bullets for werewolves, not vampires?"
"And idiots who don't know about vampires."
*salesman slowly walks away*

 I just got finished watching "shadow of a vampire" with John Makovich in it....freaky movie, and some coincidence that this thread pops up right after it ;)

*Gasp* I thought I was the only one :p

@Xen- I was looking in a section of a webpage that had strange news stories, and I just found one that is really absurd. I really should post it. It involves a ham sandwich, two woman, and a burgler

We have some weird guys that go to my college and pretend to be vampires. They dress in black trench coats and act out vampire scenes from pen and paper RPGs.

Hopefully I can profit from my "vampire reviving kit" I'm selling.
