Something like 'Rebel Galaxy' but better...

I'm looking for something like 'Rebel Galaxy', but... um... better.

What I mean is this game is quite simplistic and bare bones. 'Sailing' the space is in one layer as in 2D, you can't go up and down, just left and right, hence sailing in space.

Basically I want a game with similar premise, you having a space ship, large world, factions, quests, freedom of choice - be a pirate, trader, mercenary whatevs.

But I don't want a hardcore simulator however. Hence me saying "something like 'Rebel Galaxy', but better". I know there's some hardcore stuff out there like EVE, but I have no time for such.

A friend of mine liked Elite: Dangerous. I haven't tried it myself.

Hmm, not sure if it's playable in single player from reading steam descriptions. I don't want online. Gonna put in in wish list, wait for a sale.

If you can find it, you could try Freelancer.

Rebel Galaxy sort of sounds a bit like Star Control II.. which was one of the best games ever made (but which will feel a bit dated now, unless you grew up in the 90s and are into that sort of thing)
