After installing it I found it odd that when I put the play the world disk in and installed it the game only added a several civs but Summer etc was not in it but then when I downloaded it conquests it had all civs.

I though they were suppose to be expansions but for somereason PTW and Conquests are two different games but for some reason you will get them all if you have conquests. The civ website mentioned them as PTW civs or conquest civs so what is the difference?

Second when I put the original disk back in and clicked the original icon it said I had to put the civ 3 disk in. BUT IT ALREADY IS IN!:

Please help, Thank you.

Here is the difference between PTW and Conquests:

Play the World

Conquests

I don't know the answer to your question about the disks. It sounds like you have several game installs and several disks; be sure you are putting in the disk that matches the particular install. Otherwise, I don't know.

Well, the first part is easy. PtW and Conquests are expansions that each come with a separate and different exe-file. So even after installing the expansion you can still chose whether you want to play Vanilla or PtW or the full Conquests content, which might be of importance if you - for exapmle - want to continue or revisit a game you started before installing the expansion or if you want to play a mod that was designed for Vanilla or PtW. There also are versions of Complete that are really "complete" and keep the exe-files for Vanilla and PtW intact. So you can still play Vanilla or PtW. There are other versions of complete (and also Civ III Gold) that only include the most up to data Conquests (or PtW) exe-file. So here you can't go back to the previous release.

The second one is a bit harder, i think some of the expansions also update the Vanilla game to the most recent version. And I think there were two different copy protection schemes for US and Europe versions of Vanilla. So updating a Euopean main game with a US expanison (or vice versa) might change the copy protection. Usually this should be solvable if you use the most recent expansion disk also for starting Vanilla. However there were some problems with copy protection stuff when the expansions were released.
If your problems remain, here's a hint: some years ago a German game magazin (PC Games) released a C3C version that was not able to actually read it's own copy protection, LOL. So they had to release legal and official No-CD patches to satisfy their customers. I am not allowed to tell you where those files are located for obvious reasons. But those files are still around, and if you really want them you should be able to find them...
