Installation: Extract the files and copy the folder A Game of Ice and Fire 0.1 Alpha into your mod folder. I guess you all know how to start a mod :)

Recommended: Start the game this way: SINGLE PLAYER - PLAY NOW! .... don't play a CUSTOM GAME because if you change the starting conditions it could make debugging more and more difficult.

Known issues:

* error message "Your movies are not installed correctly"
SOLUTION: ignore it and click it away ;)
* eastern Civs got "Bronze Yohn Royce" as hero
* eastern Civs can build "The Unsullied" from the beginning

Hi community,

I'm busy in creating a "Song of Ice and Fire" mod and want to share my progress, discuss several ideas, get feedback and some help in questions concerning different implementation problems..

In this first post I will introduce the ideas behind the mod, release the features I have planned and if some of you are interested I will update regularly :)
All posts below this one are for discussing, questioning and answering.

Pardon my halting English, my native language is German.

The mod is based on the latest release of "Fall From Heaven 2" and the great fantasy epic from George R.R. Martin.

The Song of Ice and Fire-Mod-Features

Release (beta): maybe August 2010, more likely "When it's done" :crazyeye:
Language: German and English
Images & Graphics: Collected all around the internet ... I make this mod for myself and share it with friends like you ;) don't think there is any copyright problem
Spoilers I try not to integrate information about the settings in the books. It should give all information known in Westeros 297 after Aegon's Landing when the first book begins.
Civilopedia/Information: I already read the books twice and heard both audiobooks (German and English), I use lots of informations from the westeros.org wiki and thetowerofhands and the German board eis-und-feuer.de.

Maps: Free play from beginning without any explored technologies ... you can make your House however you want it to be.
Later I will create two scenarios, one only with a large westeros and one with the Eastern continent, too. The Civs will be as progressive as they are in the books and the wonders and cities are built as they are in the books

Civilizations: 12 (Arryn, Baratheon, Frey, Greyjoy, Lannister, Martell, Stark, Tully, Tyrell, Targaryen, Bolton and Nightwatch). Every civ got special units, buildings and unique Heroes.
Later I will add the Dothraki, the 9 Free Cities, the Others and some eastern peoples like Qartheens.

character screen

Leader: at least 23 (Lysa, Renly, Robert, Stannis, Walder, Balon, Euron, Victarion, Cersei, Tywin, Kevan, Doran, Arianne, Eddard, Robb, Edmure, Mace, Daenerys, Viserys, Roose, Ramsay, Jon Snow and Jeor)

Religions: 5 (Old Gods, Faith of the Seven, Faceless Men, R'hllor and the Drowned God)
I tried to integrate the Great Other, the Manyfaced God, the Horse God or the Moonsingers but there is far too little information available

Resources: yet done are weirwood, dragonglass and dragoneggs (all quite rare), they all can be found on the world map. Valyrian steel and Wildfire will be available by researching the secrets of Valyria, blood magic etc. and building descent buildings/wonders (Alchemist's Guild)
Magic will be heavily thinned out, the word "mana" won't be seen in my mod because there IS no mana ;) But it will get more important while you play ;)

Special resources dragonglass, dragoneggs and weirwood:

TechTree: secret :goodjob: okay my plan is: 3 different parts
1. techs to create a civilized, medieval (quite contradictory :p) society .. fishing, feudalism,
2. Research places and history of Westeros and the Eastern continent to regain knowledge about old Valyrian secrets, the Children of the Forest, the mystics of the east.
3. Further technologies that go "beyond" the things we got to know in the 4 books and comics (Hedge Knight). Perhaps it will be possible to get the knowledge of dragon breeding by any House ... maybe, maybe not.

The armageddon counter shows the influence of magic in the world. You will have to find out what increase the "magic counter" and what lowers him. If you're deep in the story you will know what

Heroes: The importance of hero units is even higher than in Fall From Heaven 2. Of course you can build non-unique heroes but they won't be as strong as our heroes.
Some heroes are bound to religions (Melisandre to R'hllor), some are bound to houses (the Kingslayer to Lannister), some are bound to techs (Brienne of Tarth to "Honor") or just to your alignment (The Mountain That Rides to evil leaders)

For example getting and breeding a dragon egg will be time consuming, hard and complicated ... ;) And even if you succeed, the dragons will be small and not as mighty as they will be IF they survive... because everyone in the world will KNOW that you are raising dragons ....
A possible feature will be units you're forced to protect (like children of the great Houses) because the enemy could abduct them and get some nice advantages if he succeed.

Rhaegal, Viserion and Drogon in action ...

Heraldry:Someone made a small vanilla Mod for the Song of Ice and Fire and I used those banners and created the rest myself.

HELP: If you got some skills in changing or even creating 3D models and would like to see some of your creations in the Ice and Fire mod I'd love to integrate them. An example: I need two different versions of the FFH2 paladin: One in white steel with a white cloak (Kingsguard) and one golden, ideally without helmet and long blonde hair (Jaime Lannister) THIS WOULD BE GREAT!
And I'm always happy if you got ideas for wonders, heroes, buildings or just criticism or comments ... I need feedback! ;)

ToDo list (soon)
  • Delete obsolete FfH2 content (Altar of the Luonnotar etc.)
  • Complete tech tree
  • Add all missing civilopedia texts
  • Complete and balance all unit skills and values
  • Complete and balance all building skills and values
  • Complete and balance all wonder skills and values

ToDo list (later)

  • Adding children/wards/hostage system
  • Reintegrate "corporation" system for guilds or major Houses (not sure yet)
  • Revise complete civic system
  • Adding new playable Civs (Dothraki, Qarth, 9 Free Cities, Slaver's Bay, The Others, Wildlings, House Hightower, House Florent, House Karstark)
  • Translate all civilopedia texts to German
  • Improve or find better unit/building skins
  • Create different scenarios (Aegon's Landing, Robert's Rebellion, 297 (Beginning of the books), 300 (End of book 4)

awesome:goodjob:

Looks like you have a good start on it!

One suggestion I would have would be to get rid of the good/neutral/evil alignment system. It doesn't seem to really fit into the theme of the Fire and Ice series.

Hm first I wasn't sure but I disagree ;)

I think the good/neutral/evil-System is a great way to exclude some combinations of leader and heros ;)

For example: Walder Frey and Ramsay Bolton are evil, and Edmure Tully and Eddard Stark are good.
Gregor Clegane can only be built by evil leaders, Brienne of Tarth only join good leaders.

Let's see how it works. I can delete it if it don't work well ;)

IIRC, The faceless men are synonymous with the many faced god. The many faced god is basically any god of death from any other religion, and that's what they worship.

I could be wrong though.

you are right, I didn't bother with them yet ... always something to learn about the Song ;)

Thanks ;)

Perhaps a more appropriate way would be to use Honor/Neutral/Dishonor in place of Good/Evil.

I like that .... will change the alignments ;)

Honorable, neutral and ruthless?

Hmm... I think Friends of Cersei ought to become a new intellectual or competence category. We are speaking about morals here. What if we call the third category as Lannister's Lackeys?

So, Honourable, Neutral and Lannister's Lackeys?

guess ruthless or sinister would be the right replacement for "evil" ;)

I got more problems with finding unique common units/buildings for the Houses.

Spearmen instead of Swordsmen for House Martell?
goldsmith just for Lannister?
Axemen just for Stark & Bolton?

What else?

Alchemists for Lannisters? They used them in King's Landing.

I think it would be the best if armies were quite generic, but if the number of heroes was a lot greater than in FFH.

"Neutral" and "Ruthless" characters will be able to build the Alchemist's Guild what makes avalaible the resource "wildfire" ;) Alchemists as units are a very good idea, don't know if they should be only available to Lannisters

And you are absolutely right .. the armies will be generic, just 1 or 2 differences if it fits. "Ranger" will be special Hunter for the Night's Watch for example.

Individualization will be possible by hiring sellswords or assassins and of course by using heroes ;) And there WILL be lots of heroes :)

Some updates :)
  • The Wall works well, finally ...
  • I integrated about 45 wonders including the House and religion specific ones
  • I make sure that EVERY hero, unit and building has at least a unique skin, perhaps even a unique model
  • Thinning out the FfH2 mod is almost done, two religions and lots of buildings and units are deleted, like Werewolves, infernal creatures, elementals and chariots (yeah that's right, Westeros ain't got no chariots! Don't know why but I'm pretty sure they don#t use them :p
  • made some significant progress in the techtree, yet the hardest thing to balance :) Look forward to "Valyrian steel", "Mercernaries", "Prostitution", "Secrets of Qarth" and much more new techs.
Furthermore I made sure that there a several ways to reach a technology .. for example "dragon breeding" can be reached by religious research (R'hllor etc.) or by scientific and historical research (Alchemists, warlocks, ancient Valyria etc.)
  • I made some progress in changing unit skins and improved some hero skins

Here are some pictures:

There is also an (official) RPG by Green Ronin which can be a great source of quantified information. And it looks like the Campaign Guide was just released... so I ordered that.

They break down the armies (and navies) as into the following units: Archers, Cavalry, Criminals, Crusaders, Engineers, Garrison, Guerillas, Infantry, Mercenaries, Peasant Levies, Personal Guard, Raiders, Sailors, Scouts, Special, Support, Warships.

It'd be cool to see major characters have all kinds of interesting uses from bolstering (or perhaps hindering) armies or cities to providing spy-like missions or maybe even challenging other major characters. For example, Eddard Stark wouldn't be a powerful individual unit (more like a piece of equipment, in FFH currently) you could attach him to a unit which he would lead (probably like a great general, though the Romance of Three Kingdoms mod has an interesting system which would be great for this) and provide some bonuses to, or put him in a city and he'd provide some Eddard-like bonus and/or penalty.

sounds very interesting ..tomorrow I will take a look at that RPG by Green Ronin and the RoTK mod.

The hero units will offer some similar abilities. Of course units like Littlefinger or Varys can't stand a fight with the Kingslayer, Brienne or Gregor Clegane. But they got very mighty and useful talents like improving the city they are in. Vargo Hoat is able to cripple his enemies (what CAN'T be removed) what will be a really unique (and cruel) ability ..

damn I really need someone who could change some 3D unit models ... ;)
