Sons of Mars (Redux)

The League of Peace and Power, in its prospects of the Great Law of Peace, will observe these developments from the sidelines.

North American natives being passive players in the realm of international politics? Colored me shocked.

He kept on saying that about the Imperium of Mann as well.... right until Il Papa removed the restraint he placed on Netherscot territorial ambitions at their expense due to said nation flirting with heresy and wearing down Il Papa's patience.

The God Mobian, the secret demigod that rules over Earth and allows all these other countries to exist as part of his most benevolent bread and circuses, finds it humorous how OOC and IC are mingling as such, even when the game has yet to begin. :p

I also suppose it'd be up to the Catholic players exactly what they'd want me to do with the Holy City. I was originally going to move the Catholic Holy City to Germany when Sone resigned, but resolved to leave Rome as a third party Catholic powers could compete over.

That would be:

Prussia (Tyo)
Ireland (cpm4001)
Alexandria-Jerusalem (Red Spy)
Estevan Banking (Arya)
Scotland (CivGeneral)

So, Tani, since I am the only state with Chinese religion, how much do I collect?

No idea. We'll see when I'm done calculating religious provinces.

If nothing else everyone can look forward to there being NPC religions: Shi'a Islam and Buddhism. Those are going to be based out of Persia and Tibet respectively, so their holy cities are out of reach, but it's a nice prize for people to kill each other over. :mischief:

This makes me happy.

Also, rejoining in Sicily (three provinces only) as the Iron Bank of Sicily. Catholic faith.

Iron Bank will be starting with an extra sum for banking purposes.

The King of Aragon would lament the loss of his territory were he just that meta.

The only other reasonable alternative to Rome should people vote against that, would be Jerusalem. Which of course gives Red-Spy the pilgrim funds while I go about ruling the Church.

That said Rome is better, since its clear tani is biased against me for God knows what reason :p

Not biased! I was going to move the Holy City from Rome to Prussia when Sone resigned, then reasoned that it'd be best for balance for the Holy City to be located in an NPC territory (given how many players had become Catholic, it seemed unwise to make any single player controller of the faith), which Italy now was. As you've taken over the area, however, it might be good again to move it.

Historicity means little though; the center of Sunni Islam is in Mali and the center of Orthodoxy is in the Ukraine. :p

Ah, but the Pope is still in Rome no ;) so its not a matter of historicity IRL. And besides balance is overrated, differentiation is what makes a game interesting as it stirs the pot of competition.

Technically he could very well be in another city, if something like the Avignon situation was never remedied, or simply the Papacy was never established in Rome but somewhere else.

Nothing is set in stone despite the semi-historical portions of the background. That butterfly effect works well with Alien Space Bats. :p

Except I established through my subtle alteration of the lore, that the Pope rules Italy via proxy of the King which clearly means he is in Italy since he is doing the actual ruling.

Since I don't want to spam the thread with bank messages, I'll just leave the guidelines here.

  • Any country can open an account, which generates interest for the account holder.
  • There is a withdrawal fee on large withdrawals. Details to come in PM when account is open.
  • Any country can request a loan.
  • Service fees for non-Catholic Christians are higher than Catholics, but lower than non-Christians
  • Other financial services exist. PM your inquiries.
  • Every turn. If you have an account/loan, you will be PM'd a statement about interest accrued, payments due, etc.

Our policy regarding countries that have to declare policy is one of Christian charity. We will work out a deal for refinancing of existing loans, and on debt forgiveness if necessary. This service exists to increase prosperity for all, not to push countries into poverty.

We look forward to partnering with everyone soon.

Sone's lore was technically retconned out of existence when he resigned from his original position, though. :p What bits and pieces remain are entirely a matter of convenience.

With nearly a third of the players subscribing to Roman (?) Catholicism, I don't find it unreasonable that they should be able to decide whether the status quo of their Holy City being player-controlled is in their interests.

Its my lore now though ;) Its back in with my minor alteration sonny jim.

Oh and I am perfectly fine with Catholic players voting for a city if they want that, so long as said holy city is either Jerusalem, Rome or Santiago de Compostela ;) and so long as Il Papa remains firmly planted in Rome where by decree of Papal rule of Italy I say he is.

Tany there are like four different kinds of Sunni and Shia each, do they all get holy cities (or at least the ones with PCs)?

Also doesn't the heresy founder get a double bonus cause he has the holy city?

Ah, but surely the heretics holy city remains where the non-heresy original religions holy city is AA ;). The Protestants Holy City is still Jerusalem, despite them being abominable abject heretics. Its merely that the original Church doesn't get the revenue any more :(

It occurs to me I technically didn't add a one-time bonus for changing faiths, on that note. Remedied.

It represents increased revenues from confiscating property / eliminating the privileged status of your prior faith. Understandably you don't want to change too much.

If you're religion A and switch to B, all A provinces will pay you. If you immediately were to switch from B to C, however, you'd only receive more money from B provinces. Doing it too much will outdo the monetary benefit.

Pre-emptively stating this isn't just for Catholics. It works for ALL shared faiths. A diabolical move would be convincing an NPC to switch faiths.

Put the Pope in Dublin! It's rainy and there's the Stinking Liffey to enjoy! 10x Better Than Rome! (or not :p)

On the whole, though, I really haven't got any particularly strong opinions on this matter. I'd be fine with leaving the Pope and holy city for Catholicism in Rome, but also fine with some alternatives (we could move the holy city elsewhere while keeping the Papacy based in Rome (for whatever "historical" reasons people want), move the Papacy elsewhere while keeping the holy city as Rome, or, if someone wanted to go to extreme lengths to make things much more confusing, set up the equivalent of an Antipope in another city that some Catholic nations can recognize as their holy city and spiritual leader, a la Avignon.)

Really, though, I'll probably just wait and see what solutions others come up with before committing to anything.

I assumed that Dauphinois Christianity was the Western Schism never having resolved itself, oddly enough. That'd be up to Bair, though!

is a schism on eastern orthodoxy possible? :p

Nestorianism, Old Believers (priestly branch), Old believers (non-priestly branch), Old Calendrists, Unrecognised national orthodox branch (like the "Kyiv Patriarchate" IRL, which is officially part of the Moscow Patriarchate) Miaphysitism, Arianism, Collyridianism, Pelagianism...
