Sony BMG says: You're a thief if you listen to your CD music on your iPod

To start;

1. Reduce the price of albums to less than ten dollars.
2. Ensure that most albums are not comprised of one hit and eleven bombs.
3. Reduce the production cost by using a paper-based sleeve to hold the disc instead of the plastic case which people just pack away in favor of a disc book.

One and two are no-brainers for sure, but three I might not be as ammeable to. What I would like to see is record copanies putting more time, effort and thought into album packaging, so that it's actually WORTH IT to but it. Look at old record covers: all sorts of great artwork, photos, sometimes even extras that you get inside. Now we get a thin piece of carboard, folded in two, with a playlist, credits, some uninspiring art on the front, and a dorky picture of the band somewhere. Why am i paying so much extra for nothing?!

Ah, but the old record covers were, nonetheless, a paper-based sleeve, weren't they?

Ah...very true! I guess a carboard cover wouldn't be bad at all (probably better, in fact) but I still want better artwork!

I really don't have an issue with the point they raised. Let us compare to another copyrighted medium. It sure as hell isn't legal for you to photocopy every page of a book just to have another copy of (randomly picked title) Debt of Honor for you to take with you and leave the original at home. For some reason, though, it's legal with CDs.

and so mp3 player companies are operating on illegal grounds?

Sure it is. You can photocopy a book if you want, you just can't sell it or give it away.

What about those "no reproduction without permission..." warnings?
Practically speaking, I don't think so apply so long as you aren't selling it, or giving it to others to keep them from buying legitimate copies.

What about those "no reproduction without permission..." warnings?
If they're like most of the ones I've seen, you can ignore them on the grounds that the law gives you permission.

Can I still sing along with songs when I'm driving? Or is that stealing from the radiostation?:shifty:

If there's anyone else in the car, you ought to pay a public performance fee. :p

It's obvious you never heard my singing. ;) I'd be more likely to have to pay for emotional damage to the listener.

To hell with their "Property"

Enough dependence on government force. If the free market were left to decide this fools would go out of buisness if they insisted on their silly backward ways.

Piracy is the future, deal with it, it cannot be stopped only slowed

what do I care what some idiot lawyer rants? It doesn't change the fact that the law says otherwise, in fact our law specifically gives me the right to make a copy for personal use :smug:

edit: oh and even if the law didn't state that, it would sure as hell not be 'stealing'. You'd think that a lawyer would know better .... :shake:
