Should we be keeping soldiers, warriors, etc. in the city square itself, or should they just be within the boudaries of the culture? For instance, when a new warrior is produced, should he be fortified at that spot if we don't have any there? Make sense?

Yes Yes Yes! You need to defend your cities with units. In despotism, monarchy, and communism, each unit in the city quells unhappiness of the citizens.

If you leave your city undefended, somebody will walk in and defend it with his own units!
