I have searched post over several forums for help regarding the same problem many are having.

Game problems I have had like freeze than crash. It would stutter on sound then go black while sound still heard. I'd play for two hours and it would crash to black screen. I would leave it for ten minutes and come back to a black screen.

I tried everything others recommended to no avail so I uninstalled, cleaned registry and all files regarding game including hidden ones.

I then uninstalled my audio drivers and used the search tool with XP to go on line to find drivers which it did.

I then installed Civ IV again along with the new patch and have tried to force a crash again to no avail. Everything is working great! Played four hours last night and two more this morning without a hint of problems. I even left it sit for half an hour to see if it would crash but no it did not. I even have my video set to highest performance.

I'm posting this because one it worked for me and two I've not seen another post addressing possible sound driver problems, at least none I've seen. I hope this helps some to play the game because it rocks!

I have an older motherboard with with on board graphics and sound. I just bought my new video card from newegg for 35$ and am going to buy a better sound card this week to avoid future problems.
