I don't want to post a link, Google exists for that.

Someone told me that soy drinks take away man-ness and that's why only gay people drink it.

Sounds crazy but then I googled and found that the drinks are used in hormonal treatments.

Sooooo... have you heard of such a thing? :)

I dunno, but hippy health-freaks have been anti-soy for awhile now.

Why not post a link if you've already done the googling?

Some Wiki quick quotes...

In Asia, the drink is common among the general population and is often served as a meal. In the West, it has gained popularity as a milk substitute for those who practice veganism, are lactose intolerant or who are under acne treatment.

Soymilk is nutritionally close to cow's milk, though most soymilk commercially available today is enriched with added vitamins such as vitamin B12. It naturally has about the same amount of protein (but not the same proteins) as cow milk.

I think some people think it is "unmanly" because of all the milk 'propaganda'. Commercials showing big strong people drinking. "It does a body good."

It probably doesn't help that the people that (most likely) started using it in Western culture were vegans, vegetarians and other such people. They've generally been seen as weak or unmanly because they don't eat meat (amongst other things).

I think the 'manly' rumors are from the estrogen-like components of it.

It has been recommended internationally by pediatric associations that soy formulas not be used as the primary or sole source of nutrition for infants due to the high risk of several deficiencies, including calcium and zinc.[citation needed] Some studies have also indicated that soy may act similarly to the hormone estrogen in developing infants.[citation needed] This has caused some concern that soy formula may cause undesirable side effects, such as reproductive problems.[citation needed] However, no studies to date have shown any negative effects on infants resulting from the estrogen-like compounds in soy formula.

That could be it Bamspeedy. I've never heard of that though and I used to drink it a lot when I was really into veganism. Maybe I just missed that part though. :p

as long as there are no estrogens or substances causing impotence or errectile dysfunction in it, i'd say you're on the safe side :)

I've heard about the estrogen mimic issue. Pretty controversial, and I'll wait for slightly more conclusive evidence before altering my diet. AFAIK, it's not well understood, and there's arguments for and against. I'm more concerned about the cancer issue than losing a few sperm cells, personally. I can do with lessened fertility - I don't want kids!

There was a time when only 'gays' drank bottled water...

The source appears to be http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=53327 . Considering he says things like "homosexuality is always deviant", I think it's pretty clear what his point of view is.

Also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WorldNetDaily#Soy.2Fhomosexuality_link_claim .

Research suggests it has no such effect: http://www.upenn.edu/researchatpenn/article.php?250&hlt . So unless someone has some actual scientific research to post, consider what that someone told you to be a load of old rubbish.

Also, and I realise this is probably worthy of a topic in its own right, I'm curious why people conflate "non man-ness" with "being gay". I realise the common stereotype, but it's one that I've always found particularly confusing. If anything, men who are attracted to men should surely be more interested in man-ness...

What happens if women drink it? I guess it must make take away all possible man-ness from them, and therefore make them sex mad. Do gay women drink it, or only straight women? Surely we therefore be feeding it to infant girls to cure them of any evil-gayness?

(Also note that in the UK when homosexuality was illegal, the punishment used to be to have to _take_ estrogen...)

Because I did not want to inject personal bias and I know some sites state cultural beliefs and other quote scientific evidence - I just wanted to be neutral :)

I don't know - I quoted directly to avoid misguiding the question

Have you a link for this?

:p

I don't like the taste of soy milk regardless.
Do you mean soya milk that tastes like sour vomit?

I am told that soy drinks are sweet and not from soya. Not actually tasted them.

depends on which man-ness that you're referring to.

virility: highly highly doubt it
the other manness, without which I'll be a self-conscious anorexic woman: prolly
