I just downloaded Service Pack 2. The Dell now takes forever to start up, and the task bar has disappeared. What should I do?

The dell starting up i don't think has anything to do with SP2. what do you mean the taskbar disappeared?

The Start bar at the bottom. I might have an idea of getting it back, however. Is there a way to access the Control Panel without the Start button?

Yeah click on the my computer Icon on the desktop. The other places selection includes the control panel.

Are you sure that's a viable option for XP? Isn't there some way to access it via Explorer?

Yes it's a viable option in XP. If you cannot access My Computer then you will have to use safe mode to adjust settings.

Edit: I have realised there are also other ways of accessing My Computer, as long as you have some shortcut icons on the desktop.

Here is a screenshot of what MarineCorps was referring to:

This might take a little longer than I thought...okay, the taskbar does show up when I unselect Auto-Hide. The thing disappears when I click on it, though.

Edit: Well, locking it took care of it disappearing, although now it's just a fourth visible.

Ah, problem is, if I do unlock it, the taskbar will disappear again. Well, no matter. I guess I'm on the right track now. Thanks, everyone!
