Space's first HoF attempt

On popular demand: the victory screen

And on this screen an example of where I could've improved :): there's a hill without an extra city, which would've meant and extra point, albeit one specialist not a happy civilian.

During the game I've put the points of each ten turns in an excel sheet resulting in the following graphs, in blue the actual points, in red the gain within those 10 turns. The conquest phase could have been sooner if I hadn't allowed the Sumerians The Pyramids. They were a tough nut to crack and caused some WW-ness, costing me happy-points in the start.
I managed to keep the die-back at bay a bit by researching future techs. They amount to 5-8 points or so, but do so during the last 100 odd turns. And it doesn't hurt at all because of the three-beakered specialists. Money was good, I didn't even bother to put the first shields in the kitty before rushing. And I've learned that even more info can be got from the F1 screen: I think that most people know that you can order the cities by clicking the name of the column that you're interested in. The food column shows how much extra grain a city is producing, in the end game this shows exactly which cities lack a necessary aqueduct or hospital, very helpful with so many cities.

As mentioned in the posts, I've kept the Dutch alive to the end but the poor sods didn't even need any guarding since their last city was stuck at size 3 and needed an entertainer: cheese anyone?

Are you sure it makes any difference in points?......I thought a hill would score the same as a city square under the Mayans!? :)

Congrats on the game! :band:

Thx, EMan. :) Even under the Mayans a hill produces 1 food, a city always 3 being the Mayans, but even 2 would be better better than 1. One specialist wouldn't have mattered too much, but it would've been there for 300+ turns, so in the end it does matter, although not a lot.

But....a Hill produces a Happy Person (minus 1 food)......a Mayan city square produces 2 specialists (minus 1 food).....Aren't they the same in points? (viz. 2 versus 1+1) :)

The city produces 1 happy person and a half a specialist, doesn't it? So the diffference is 1/2 a specialist, isn't it? I was wondering what the value of a specialist vs a a happy citizen was, so thank you for that bit of info. :)

"Sort of", BUT......you can't have a Happy Person on the square where you build the new city! (viz. the hill square can "contain" a Happy person IF you DON'T have build a city on it!) :)

I'm assuming you're talking about building an "additional" city and not moving one.........If you move a city from say a grassland square to a hill, you would of course gain 3 food or 1.5 specialists. :)

Indeed, I was talking about an additional city. And I didn't realize there's no happy person on the city square itself. :wallbash: Hmm, interesting.... my dense builds on desert/plains was not optimal presumably. Damn you, EMan, now I'm going to have to try one again... The 3790 domination limit wasn't that high either as later trials with Mapfinder proved, so definitely room for improvement. :)

Yes, a space oddity, getting a 4400+ map using MapFinder will make a HUGE difference in score! :goodjob:

I wouldn't worry about the city placements too much......the counter-argument is that ICS (Infinite City Sprawl) is a VERY good tactic EARLY in a Milk Run game so that you can achieve the goal of getting a Happy Person on EACH "non-city" square.

IMHO, only after that has been accomplished AND you have plenty of cash to build aqueducts, hospitals etc. would you consider "consolidating" (viz. abandoning) cities AND placing cities on the coast to take advantage of the "Free" sea squares! :)

Well, that's what I've done in this game, and that's why the 'middle' part of the game took so long, even longer than the conquest phase. One or two turns an evening... founding in good spots, abandoning cities elsewhere, timing it so they'd be down to pop one before doing so, forever balancing 1, 2 or 3 tiles from the domination limit.
It struck my perfectionist bone no end. ;)

Yeah, that's a lot of work!

Did you also "(plant &) chop" forests to generate shields to accelerate production of settlers/workers? :)

No, just (short-)rushed them, chopped when forest was available. I haven't planted... thanks for the tip! I understand you can do it only once per tile. How do you keep track which one you've already done?

Glad you asked me that!

Yes, ONCE per tile.

I am in on the road in Japan right now, so have to keep it brief. (Japanese keyboard!)

My answer is to update the city name with positions in the 21-city-radius that have been chopped. There is a thread somewhere(?).
Basically, I use 1 thru 9 in the city name for squares 1-square from city center and a thru l for squares 2-square from the city center. I think I wrote an example in GOTM34 Final Spoiler.
Example: 005/135cdf
where 005 is the city number (viz. name)
135 and cdf are 6 positions in the 21-square radius that have been chopped! :)

Congratulations on a good win!

I remember that, it was in "Forestry Operations" in the Strategy Articles forum.
Too much for my weak will though!

Post Scriptum: This game was played with the 'allow Wonder Victory' flag on, so isn't admissible in the HoF. So don't try this at home folks!
That was our initial impression upon checking the .sav. I'll look into it further in case the impression was in error.

Upon public and private debate, a wonder victory rules change is pending. This thread's game will clear and be posted in the next update.

Congratulations, Space!
