Spain Emperor help!

Hi, I am having a blast with Spain its challenging to say the least. So far i can get 2 uhvs in time.

1- I can settle America by 1200 or so at emperor level using the viking tactic
2- I can get 10 gold/silver in time using conquerors in South america and a few ships to some spots in Oceania.

But... Spreading 40% catholicism by 1700 is realy so hard to do at the same time as the 2 other uhvs!!!

things that mess it up is :

a) printing press and protestantism. Is it random which country chose to convert to protestantism? or can i influence them to not convert to protestantism when printing press is discovered?

b) Should i go conquer as many islamic cities as possible and do persecution spam to lower islamic % and thus increase catho %?

c) Is there a fast way to spread religions? or is it 3 missionaries + travel time each turn that is the limiting factor?

d) does the AI do persecution at all?

e) or any other strat or how do you guys do it to spread catho to 40%?

Regarding D, I'm pretty sure that non-catholic AI's will use Persecution to get rid of your carefully spread religion, unless you convert them. Perhaps conquering Europe would be easier?

A trick I'm thinking of, but haven't tried, involves (temporarily) converting as many civs as possible from Catholic to something else. Then when the reformation hits, almost nobody would convert to Protestantism, right? Most of the cities would remain Catholic.

Alternatively, discovering Printing Press early gives you more time to convert everyone back to Catholicism.

How you do UHV3 is to grow your new world cities massively.

Okay thank you, will try the big city approach as I failed with islamic vassals approach to lessen printing press effects. thanx

Here is an idea that may be helpful: Try to stop any Catho civ from discovering Printing Press

Then you don't have to care about other religions, just grow population in north and south America, that's fine.

AI do presecution indeed, so to spread Catholicism to civs with other religions, you need spy to convert their religion, and maybe you have to do that for multiple times.

I finished all three UHVs of Spain recently, and with 50% Catholic population.
