IMO every civs needs their threads so that
1) discussions about a civ can be held in one single thread
2) the General Discussions thread can be less crowded.
3) the mere existence of civ specific thread can inspire more strategy discussions.

I havent seen a Spain related thread recently, so here we go.

Played on Normal/Monarch.

Spain has a lot of hammers but relatively slow tech speed compared to other western Euro civs. Therefore Rome must be secured at all costs.
While my troops were in Italy, the Moors DoWed and captuted Barcelona.
I quickly drove them out of Iberia, only to find out that HR had took Rome while i was busy.
I DoWed and vassalized them after taking Rome and Wien and razing Venice. Wien is contested area for Spain.

Another drawback for Spain is their low core pop.
During the Med Age their only core cities are Santiago and Madrid.
Madrid takes a hell lot of time to grow, and Portugal takes one of Santiago's 3 fishing boats.
Therefore extensive expansion before the Renaissance Age is not recommended.

A GS spawns in Cordoba thanks to La Mezquita. Builds academy in Barcelona, the only valid cottage city in Iberia.

Civ4ScreenShot0096.JPG
Razed Lisbon and vassalized Portugal.
The resource tiles there alone make a good enough reason to conquer them.

Civ4ScreenShot0098.JPG
Razed Marsille to take the clam for Barclelona.
Peaced out cause Rome was being threatened.

Firearms and Exploration are the two most important techs for Spain.
Firearms enable Tercio, Expl enables Conqs.
They are also Renaissance techs which means your core expands to Barcelona and Cordoba.

Civ4ScreenShot0103.JPG
Triggered the conquerers event after I got both Firearms and Exploration.
Really, you dont need any techs beyond them for the UHV.
Sure, Optics and Geography helps a ton in terms of economy, but they are not necessary.

First colony to settle in America. Plis Ultra!

Civ4ScreenShot0039a.jpg
DoWed on France again. Took Bordeaux and vassalized them. Was going to give the city back but it had the Sistine Chapel in it. Bordeaux was used as settler/worker farm till the end of the game.

Conquering Peru is easy.

Civ4ScreenShot0053.JPG
In Mexico you need a bit more troops and time.

Civ4ScreenShot0051.JPG
Yay, Colonialism. Theocracy also helps.

Civ4ScreenShot0068.JPG
Encoraging vassals to adopt Theocracy.

Civ4ScreenShot0056b.jpg
Diverting vassals from researchig Academia.
The best way to acheive the 3rd goal (30% Catholic pop and no Protestant civs in Euro) is making sure that Protestantism does not get founded.
Since England is not my vassal in this game, I have to demand gold and secure embargos against them at every possible moment.

Civ4ScreenShot0055.JPG
I actually used a Great Artist here to get that gold quickly. A waste of a GA, cause I had more time than I thought at this moment.

Manilla is colonized via the Trading Company event.
1 in Iberia + 3 in Mexico + 1 in Colombia + 3 in Peru + 1 in Brazil + 1 in the Philliphines = 10 gold/silver secured.

Civ4ScreenShot0070.JPG
Bug off England.
You need a lot of colonies to get that 30% Catholic pop.

Civ4ScreenShot0071.JPG
The Dutch spawned with Academia so I had to kill them before they telraded it to anyone else.
Amsterdam happens to be in my contested area so I decided to keep it.

Civ4ScreenShot0079.JPG
Civ4ScreenShot0080.JPG
A great mission in South America increases the Catholic pop from 29% to 33%.

Civ4ScreenShot0082.JPG
Historical Victory achieved.
A shame I didnt conquer Spanish Morocco, but at least I secured Brazil.

Do we still have that Irish problem aka Britain ignoring next door island with few Indy defenders and useful land?

The forum is currently going overboard with strategy threads that (I think!) should really belong in the Gameplay/Guides Subforum.

*hint*
Whoa, there is a gameplay/guides subforum!

In general, that is going to remain a problem until DoC gets some better naval AI (like the one in K-Mod).

I think British AI treats Ireland as a remote, useless and separate continent, and not something next door and desirable.

The area near Sacramento has a lot of silver and gold. It's historical too, so I always settle it first.
