Spoiler - Gilligan and the castaways (GOTM23)

1160AD : Greeks capture Teotihuacan & the Lighthouse from the Aztecs

1160AD : Caravans from Delphi and Narcity arrive in Paris, returns 232 and 290 gold (I'm not big into the caravan part of the game but I admit, some nice routes do help the old gold coffers...)

1280AD : Population hits 10 million (thanks in part to the rise in luxeries... and a strike at the prophylactics factory ;) )

1300AD : Greek solidiers capture Aztec capitol and C's Observatory (forgot about that one). Talk about overkill, out of 6 crusaders I only lost one. Oh well, aboard the ships they go, off to fight new opponents...)

oh yeah and somewhere in here (between 1160 and 1300) I built Issac's Newton's School for continuing education :)

And with that I shall get to sleep...

- Narz :king:

I have found this GOTM to be a very maddening one. I elected not to keep a log, but now I am wishing that I had so I could share some of the frustrations that I have had!

The slow start due to the island hurt, but what REALLY hurt was the poor terrain surrounding the island as well. Under monarchy, corruption was rampant since the cities were even further apart than they would have otherwise been. As a result, I have fewer, slow growing cities that produce less trade (net) because of the corruption.

These effects also served to hinder WOTW production, as I lost some key ones to the AI. Namely, I do not have Pyramids, Michelangelo, MPE, ASTC, JSBach, Newton and SoL. I lost UN and Women's Suffrage, too, but due to the slow start I have decided to play under Communism and utilize the veteran spies to get me back in the game. UN and WS are not very relevant under Communism. Perhaps if I capture WS and Michelangelo, I will switch to Democracy (as I prefer), but only if I capture those WOTWs.

I do have a decent game going, and I am making some progress after a poor beginning and a fair mid-game. As WOTWs go, I have Colossus, STWA, Leonardo, Copernicus, Magellan, and Darwin. I captured GL (Americans, who have been assimilated :borg: ), but it only provided three or four techs before expiring. I also have Athens building a dead WOTW, and I am approaching electronics, so I should get Hoover Dam without a fight.

It is about 1880, and I have the Aztecs (my primary foe) relatively contained. I have captured one of their cities and destroyed another, and I have several veteran riflemen parked on production squares. The Aztecs are a couple of techs ahead of me, and I have stolen techs from most of their cities already. The only thing left to do, then, is to start taking them over! :mwaha: The veteran spies will take down the city walls, and I will blast away. The Aztecs have Pyramids and ASTC, so gaining these will provide real bonuses. :goodjob:

The French are also in my sights, too, since they have Michelangelo and Newton (not to mention some attractive tracts of land! :groucho: ).

I am considering staying under Communism long enough to build a fleet of veteran spies and to discover machine tools and tactics. These are the only remaining upgrades left from Leonardo. At that point, I may go Fundy depending upon the production levels I have. I did try Fundy for awhile, and I amassed a wad of cash (despite no Michelangelo) which I used to buy a Sioux city and a Zulu city. Strangely, when I went Fundy, all other civs went to Democracy. The Sioux and Zulu opted out first, so I bought some new friends. :D

However, techs were at about 20 turns  under Fundy, so I discovered Communism. That solved the tech problem, but now my production and cash generation have been hindered.

I am finally building infrastructure (railroads, factories) that will assist me in my plan for world conquest! Whatta game!

ElephantU --

Magellan’s could have been a hit if the camels refreshed after delivery (I saw this a couple of times in other games, was hoping that it might happen here as well -- also like the faster move for boats anyway. 50% extra speed might mean an extra delivery or two=> 2K+/-g, almost an advance, maybe more, thus potentially on a par with Darwin’s.)

I have mixed feelings about Invention (I forget if it is the combo of Invention AND Navigation, or some sort of hit with either). Another hit regarding Invention is the ending of free techs from huts -- probably my major reason for stalling (I tend to search too slowly).

Had three trade routes with America -- Salt was later (had a gold & Salt to Aztecs as well by the time I was on the way to Ulundi). Third route was oil with Washington (500AD; real close and the American capital (thus potentially large in the future), larger than Athens at the time!)

Delay RR? I wasn’t too concerned -- as it turned out I wasn’t the one who discovered Ind first -- I’m not sure postponing RR would have affected anything; I may have acquired Darwin’s too soon, but I think that that was also a minor aspect (affecting some of the beakers a little early). On the other hand it did allow Explosives, & the modification of terrain sooner, so maybe it evened out.

I’m discovering on the second time through how much friendlier Classic is over MGE. In MGE, I pumped up a relationship from Hostile to Worshipful, conducted business, traded maps…the very NEXT TURN with no action on my part, it was back to hostile!

You’re right: AT doesn’t go anywhere interesting -- it just sits around in the way of better things to look at.

The American Tech per five turns eventually became a tech every four turns…and then every three turns…

TF must have seen my Gilligan's Island Thread! :goodjob:

Anyway,
Amazing Smash! Nice game. How do you negotiate so well? The computer never gives me gifts. And if I demand I get a measly 50 gold. :(

1911 -- Discover Rockets -- > Robotics (CA, GE) America discovers the Cure for Cancer. 2736b per advance.
1912 -- Talk to our “good” friends the Americans and after 200g, Steel & Metal, learn Robotics (switch research to Space Flight.)
1915 -- Discover Space Flight -- >Plastics (CA (*), Envir(1), Fund (0)) -- a No (2) round this time. Deliver two non demanded trucks, Salt & Gold for 234g each.
1917 -- Hey! Salt & Gold are available again!
1919 -- Discover Combined Arms (WHAT?? Argh -- muffed the science choice toggle! :wallbash: NOW we’re on to Plastics. This little mistake will cost four turns -- Plastics, Super and Fusion (which I feel is necessary, especially in THIS game) are all “1” -- I’ll need to research ANOTHER off tech) 2844b required.
1923 -- Discover Plastics -- > Environ (over Fund, GE) Re-look at the math, Doh! 12 is greater than half of 23! :o Push up the lux -- 0.3.7, enough for WLTPD -- Will get the next advance in 5 turns instead of 4, but having three more specialists may make some difference later on.
1927 -- Maybe should have done this sooner -- plan out the space build stuff -- sooo we cash in 1 truck & 2200g…
1928 -- Discover Environmentalism -- >Superconductor. Athens builds the Apollo program. We look at the world and are marveled by all we see. We also forget that we already moved a trireme halfway through the look -- on continuing its move is sinks out in the ocean :o (we hate losing NON units for any reason, but stupidity is close to the top).
1929 -- Cash in a spy (41g), RB through Rifle, Alpine, Marine (75) switch to structural (30 shields -- I’m producing at 55 shields per turn, so therefore will need 30/110/270 in a box each turn for space stuff. Visit the last hut for 100g.
1930 -- Pay 106g & get another struct. Also pay 400g & a tech for safe passage for two trucks enroute to Bapedi.
1931 -- Pay 106g & get another struct. Gold (d) =684; Salt (n) = 228. Hmmm almost not worth it.
1932 -- Hey -- cash in a spy, and switch to granary (90g) & switch to Struct -- saves 16g and a half dozen keystrokes (not that we’re counting)
1933 (Salt and Gold available again. Americans discover Flight.)
1934 -- Discover Superconductor -- > Fusion Power; toggle to 7.0.3; switch Einstiens to tax guys (should get the tech in about a dozen turns, reasonably in time.)
1936 -- Have 5269g, 9 trucks and a few NON Units; sell the research lab (Americans discover Radio)
1937 -- Truck & 1080g = Module; sell temple (now that I think about it, I probably should have sold stuff a lot sooner -- forgot that I don’t have AS & that these infrastructure items have carrying costs.)
1938 -- Truck & 1080g = Module
1939 -- Truck & 1080g = Module -- wanted to get the heavy stuff out of the way sooner, thus make it easier to plan out the next steps. (Americans discover Ad Fly)
1940 -- Truck & 440 = Comp. 2952g available.
1943 -- (Building space stuff every turn) (Americans discover Rocketry)
1945 -- Nix a boat = Struc.
1946 -- Discover Fusion power (Americans discover Space Flight)
1948 -- Have 15 Struct, 4 Comp, 3 Mod -- could launch & land in 21 years (94%), but two more years & two more comp gives us 15.7 -- we wait & build.
1949 -- (Americans discover Plastics)
1950 -- The Greeks Launch -- ETA = 1966  Our power is Inadequate.
1953 -- The Americans discover Nuke Fission
1956 -- The Americans discover Nuke Power; The Americans are building LOTS of Space stuff; Aztecs and French are as well; America declares war on Russia and picks up a couple of cities (good if this is a distraction; not so good if their sciencegrows too much.)
1959 -- America discovers the Laser. Both America and the Aztecs have modo space frames waiting (AZ: 19St/5C/0M; Am: 11St/3C/0M)…all they need are three modules each. America is researching Superconductor. Needless to say, I’ve started some conversations -- but most of the folks want: a) 400g to get in the front door, and b) Superconductor is the first choice of EVERY civ (second choice is Fusion :nono: Power -- for all I know they could backward engineer Super (lol). Meanwhile I have a transport, spy, & Vet Aegis Cruiser sitting near Washington. I even thought of giving techs to America to slow them down, but of course you can guess their two top choices…
1960 -- Don’t know if this is the critical year or not. I have some defense in place (a couple of vet jeeps & a vet stealth fighter, couple of non vet spies. Space race: AZ: 22ST/6C/0M (not a bad pickup in one turn; Am: 15 ST/4C/0M Also close…
1961 -- Amer are still researching Super -- I may get a break here. The Aztecs go to Fundy (researching AT -- their only threat is grabbing Am’s research at the last minute RB & launch…no, not a threat at all.)
1962 -- Am has 17ST/5C/0M, but I think that it is too late.
1963 -- Amer goes from 8 cities to 9 cities (a Roman city switches flags) Space Race: Az: 38ST/8C/0M; Am: 19St/6C/0M
1965 -- I’m in the clear -- land next turn (I even picked up a future tech along the way). Mail away to the Duke of M.

Old N Slow - congrats, you had me on the edge of my seat there!
Jayne - finish yet?

I'm "reformatting" my AD log tonight for upload...

i ve discovered that if your only choice for commidities is food, if you dont enter any keys to accept food but wait 30 seconds the following screen will appear

accept the nil commodity and you get the first listed , SALT in Athens case.

download this sav file and you can see I have a Salt freight, with 3 trade routes fullfilled, not refreshed. Go to next turn and you can try for yourself to produce a salt freight.:)

(reedit) This seems to only work with MGE, doesn't work with Civ classic for some reason. Course why it works at all I Don't know (/reedit)

Here is my log to 1 AD:

4000 BC - Get archer from hut. Build Athens that starts to build a temple.
3950 BC - The settler build road. Research alphabet.
3750 BC - Discover alphabet. Research map-making.
3600 BC - Settler has nothing to do.
3400 BC - Athens builds temple and start with settler production.
3300 BC - Discover map-making, research code of laws. Athens change to trieme production.
3000 BC - Trieme done and goes south with settler and archer and hop onto an island. There is very little food on this island. Athens start warrior production.
2950 BC - There is fish here on the island, so Sparta is founded. Sparta has measly 1 production but good trade. Sparta starts trieme production.
2800 BC - Meet americans.
2600 BC - Archer destoys New York. I give all knowledge to them and they give me their map in exchange for my map.
2550 BC - Settler ready in Athens. Athens starts building Colussus.
-----------
computer locks!
.
.
.
.
At 1650 BC I have 5 cities and 10 discoveries. I got monarchy 2450 BC. Now I am researching trade. The americans are the weakest among civilizations and they gave me pottery once. I have not explored much at all, but just built cities on small islands near Athens. The French started building Hanging gardens some time ago.
----------
1600 BC - Hut- advanced tribe (Pharsalos) - first advanced tribe.
1500 BC - Hut - 50 gold.
1450 BC - The Romans have undertaken the great project of the Pyramids.
1300 BC - Discover Trade!!! Research Literacy. The Romans abondoned their project.
---------
Computer locks again!!!!
And all my detailed log has disappeared.
Now it's 650 BC. I have Marco Polo's Estate, and I am in Republic with 10% science. I have 10 cities and two +3 trade routes between Washington and Athens. I got 176 gold for both caravans. It is no use to talk to any civs, since they are all hostile. They have been ever since I was nice and gave them alot of my knowledge. Athens is size 8, but I don't have construction to build aqueduct!
---------
550 BC - Athens build Colussus.
500 BC - Silver-route between Athens and Corinth have been established. Got 216 gold.
225 BC - Bead-route between Athens and Rome have been esstablished. Got 410 gold.
20 AD - Athens build Coopernicus observation. I now have 27 techs, 13 cities, 1,67 million people. I think I should have made more trade routes, instead of Coopernicus wonder (6 caravans!).

el_kalkylus:

Did you get Monarchy from a hut? You were researching CodeLaws up to 2550BC and I did not see a completion, but you said you got it in 2450BC.

Am I correct in assuming that the Colossus you started in Athens in 2550BC was switched to MarcoPolo in the low teens when you discovered Trade, then restarted to finish 550BC? I was considering making MarcoPolo my first Wonder, but I found the Americans, French, and Aztecs fairly early and decided to concentrate on the 1-city wonders instead.

There are several wonders that have to be built in the right city to have maximum effect: Colossus, Copernicus, KingRich, Newtons, Shakespeares, and you could put HangingGardens in there too because the city it is build in gets extra happy citizens. If you are in a race with other civs to build wonders, focus on these first. I have seen the AI announce the "nearly done building..." something I considered not worth my time, but then they switched to the one I really wanted and finished it the next turn.

I'm puzzled about the hostile attitude problem. Did you ask for anything when you gave away techs? Did you say Yes to any requests to declare war against other civs? Did you attack anyone you had a peace treaty with? I am playing 2.42, which has "kinder and gentler" AI civs, but I have not seen the hostility toward tech gifting you describe without other issues being involved. Often on first contact there is a flurry of demands and requests; if you logged or can remember any of that it may be a clue.

Hope this helps.

Blessed Christ-Mass!

Okay, it is 1915 or so. I have assimilated the Aztecs :borg: and their wonders, and had a successful campaign against the French as well. :goodjob: They only have 4 cities left and Newton. After capturing Paris, I have Michelangelo, SoL, and Womens' Suffrage (Lighthouse and MPE, too, but both have expired). I have stayed in Communism and have built significant infrastructure and have used (and lost) several veteran spies.

Surprisingly, the French discovered mobile warfare (with STWA expiring) but have not traded it to any of the other AI. I immediately stole the technology and have many veteran armor in production.

The world will be mine!

I didn't get any techs from huts. I could have gotten Monarchy 2250 BC too, because I remember it was on a year when you can change government on the same turn. Since my computer locked, I don't remember the exact details that I wrote down.
See http://www.civfanatics.com/civ2sscsgs.shtml
edit: I think I got code of laws 2800 BC and monarchy 2450 BC. I must have forgot to write it down.

Yes. Since I concentrated more on building cities to get more trade, I never got to explore much, so I thought it was better with Marco Polo's wonder first, so that I could gift some techs. The americans got quite advanced and I even got 2 new techs from them, university and something. Marco Polo's wonder was ready 825 BC or something like that.

Yeah, I try to do that, since the wonder-effects stack. The french built hanging gardens 825 BC in Paris.

I am also puzzled. I did not agree to any war against another civ or anything, and I certainly didn't attack anyone since everyone was so far away (except the americans). I did destroy New York in the beginning, but that's because the american wanted war. Sometimes I didn't want to give other civs money and then they wanted war most of the times.

Maybe I should have built a big army. Maybe that would have given me a little more respect.

Ah - sounds like you had a similar problem to mine, only worse: your first contact with the Americans was bad. If you had made peace, then refused a request and they declared war, that would be one thing. If you want to get on their good side, even if they declare war because you refuse something (never refuse a tech request, and try to mollify them before they start demanding gold), try to pull your forces back from contact for 3 turns, then ask to negotiate again. They will make another demand, give them a few techs and you can often get the CeaseFire, wait another 3 turns and you can usually get Peace. Once you start hurting them, killing units or taking cities, their "anger" goes up and it is both harder to stop things and takes MUCH longer for them to change their attitude toward you.

One way to keep them from demanding gold is to keep your treasury small. Keep around 100 or so for emergencies, like bribing Barb Archers that pop up suddenly, use the rest for RBing improvements or PRBing caravans. This strategy does have its down side: part of the Power Rating is Gold (I think I read somewhere that you get one "point" for each 256g?), and the cost to bribe your units goes up as your treasury goes up. And then, if someone kills your capital, if there is 1000g in your treasury I think your capital will be "Rush-Built" in another city the next turn. Otherwise your empire is split with "Civil War".

Yes, more military forces does make for more respect. You cannot really walk the middle of the road. You need to either be real strong and they fear you, or real weak and they take pity on you.

Yes, it is probably true. So I continued in a completely different way:

20 AD - Athens build Coopernicus Observation. Eretreia founded. I am close enough to the Azteks. It's time for an assault. I just need to buy some troops and triemes. I gift the americans about 5 techs and they agree to an alliance. They also give me 100 gold!
60 AD - Zulus build Great library! The american city Washington builds the pyramids.
80 AD - Discover Engineering. Research Monotheism (sanitation was not available.)
140 AD - Discover Monotheism. Research Sanitation. Troy founded on a forest-island. It has silk!
160 AD - Marathon founded. Three cities are changing production to crusaders. Hopefully this will be enough to take Tenochtitland.
220 AD - Discover Sanitation. Can't afford sewer system in Athens though. Research Navigation. Luxury set to 70%, science 0%. In the next turn, my caravans will give me alot of money and science anyway, so I might as well let my cities celebrate.
240 AD - Silver and Silk from Athens arrives in Washington. I get 522 gold for each! Next turn, another demanded silk caravan arrives.
260 AD - Discover Navigation. Research Physics. I only get 402 gold for silk caravan this time (because of Navigation no doubt.) Science at 0% again.
280 AD - 2 Crusaders land on Aztek continent next to Tenochtitland.
300 AD - Aztek warrior sneak attack and kill one of my crusaders. The other crusader kill a phalanx and the warrior in Tenochtitland. Backup is on it's way.
320 AD - I refuse to give Sioux 100 gold and they declare war. I might as well send some troops to them too. Time to buy crusaders. Azteks kill one crusader. They won this time, but I will be back with more crusaders.
340 AD - Sparta builds Michelangelos chapel. Abe Lincoln wants to trade Invention to Navigation. I agree. I also give them Sanitation. 360 AD - Discover Physics! Research Steam engine! My two backup-crusaders kill 2 phalanx in Tenochtitland.
380 AD - Horsemen kill both of my crusaders! Ok, this was a stupid war. I will buy ironclads instead next turn. Copper arrive in Washington, gives 369 gold or something like that.
400 AD- Discover Steam engine. Research Bridge building.
420 AD - Two new cities founded. I now have 2 ironclads, one is on it's way to the Sioux, and one is on it's way to the Azteks.
460 AD - Find a Legion in a hut just outside of Little Bighorn. Capture Tenochtitland at last! With this ironclad, I won't have a problem capturing the rest of their cities.
480 AD - Discover Bridge building. Research Railroad. Ironclad kill every troop in Little Bighorn, so I walk right in with a crusader and get 106 gold. Gold caravan reach Philadelphia, and I get an 686 gold. With all this money, I buy 4 ironclads and a couple of caravans. I think I should kill the americans now. They are getting too advanced. Time to prepare.
500 AD - Discover Railroad. Research Chemistry. Capture Cedar Creek and make peace with the Sioux. Maybe this will hold their aggression for a while. I give two discoveries to the americans and they give us 50 gold (even though neutral). Maybe they fear my ironclads :).
--------------------
At 500 AD I have 22 cities, 36 Discoveries, 5 million people, and 4 wonders. I also have 5 ironclads, and I am looking for war.
--------------------
560 AD - Discover Chemistry. Research Industrialization. Set science at 0%. I will build Darwins Voyage in 2. Tlatelolco captured. Get 69 gold. I speak to the zulus and insist that they withdraw their troops. They declare war (just what I wanted. :))
600 AD - Athens builds Darwin's voyage. Discover Industrialization. Discover Economics. Research Theory of gravity. Silk caravan arrives in Washington. Get 360 gold.
620 AD - Kill a barbarian diplomat, get 150 gold!
640 AD - Capture Texcoco. Aztek civilization destroyed! Capture Zimbawe (with Great library). Get 140 gold. The zulus still want war.
680 AD - Copper caravan arrive in Washington. I get only 240 gold even though it was demanded. That does it! It's time for war! I buy Boston for about 400 gold. They cancel our alliance and all troops are relocated to nearest cities. At the same time my crusaders capture Ulundi.
700 AD - Found new city. Capture Philadelphia.
720 AD - Discover Theory of gravity. Research Democracy. Capture Washington (Pyramids). Capture Atlanta. American civilization destroyed! I am heading to the Romans now. Trieme sink in the big sea. Reputation is poor. And the trade routes in Athens are alot lower now. I have lost 14 trade in Athens when I destroyed the americans.
760 AD - Athens build Isaac's Newton College. Bapedi builds Leonardo's workshop. I have two Crusaders beside this city.
780 AD - Zulus declare war when I don't move my troops. French join the war against us. Government fall. Cities are in civil disorder, but I get to choose republic immediately. Get 50 gold from a hut. Capture Bapedi.
820 AD - Discover Democracy. Research Gunpowder. Warrior get surrounded by barbarians from a hut.
840 AD - Found new city.
880 AD - Discover Gunpowder. Research Metallurgy. Barbarian take one of my new undefended cities.
900 AD - Found new city.
920 AD - Found new city.
940 AD - Disover Metallurgy. Research Explosives!
960 AD - Capture Rome.
980 AD - Capture Veii.
1000 AD - Discover Explosives! Research Corporation. Buy Antium. Buy barbarian city Artemisium.
------------------------------
At 1000 AD - I have 39 cities, 10 wonders, 44 discoveries and 9,5 million people. I don't think my tactics were good, but because everyone was so hostile, I let them suffer for it.
------------------------------

1020 AD - Barbarians arrive near an unprotected city.
1040 AD - Barbarians take the city. I buy it back and get 2 crusaders for 52 gold. One crusader kills a diplomat and get 150 gold. Buy Zulus city Isandhlwana.

I finally finished the game 1752 AD. It was so boring in the end that I ended it by conquest (15 turns left or so until I would get space-parts to build).

At least I have learned alot of what I did wrong. In the next gotm I will try to fix it.

I am really impressed by Smash and Cliff's game. You two have it figured out.

I decided to play this game for fun only (plus some limited experimentation) so my GOTM score will probably suck. Here is a 'quick-and-dirty' log, mostly unedited so there are probably many typos. Something is probably also missing near the start. This is the first time I do a fairly detailed log in a GOTM; it was interesting so I'll probably do so in the future too. I also have a huge log from NMCC #6 that I may post in a day or two; huge because I got myself into a mess and even a limited nuclear war. No danger of losing though (and if it were I'd probably never admit so since NMCC #6 isn't a D+1 or D+2 game :D).

log to 100BC:

GOTM 23 -- The Trading Empire

With an Island empire, my first goal was to establish 10 cities, then build the SSC up by running to Medicine and Sanitation and building Shakes. The opening could be a Size 1 settler strategy depending on the hut contents. Then weigh whether to wait for the Trireme and send both settlers out or pump the city to size 3 right away.

BC
4000 Hut: Archer. Size 1 settler will work. The Island founded.
3950* Researching Alphabet. Roading extra square
3900
3850 Irrigating.
3800
3750 Alphabet=>Maps (22)
3700 Disband Archers.
3650 Irrigation finished
3600 mining (for pre-working Settler - there may not be a use for it, but who knows)
3550 Settler. Mine city square (ditto) Building warrior.
3500
3450 PRB warrior, switch to Settler (Trireme)
3400 Size 2. At 5 shields per turn already, size 3 is only a marginal improvement. We will send 2 settlers out
3350 NONE settler to city - sleep
3300
3250 Maps=>CoL (33). Switch to Trireme.
3200
3150 Trireme. Which way? South 2 squares - Land Ho! Building Warrior
3100 Unload on Grass. Find Fish. Continue South
3050 Second Colony founded. Continue South and West.
3000 Unload on Grass near Whale.
2950 Third Colony founded. Explore West. 2nd Warrior in The Island: starts Colossus

I thought the start went about as well as I possible.

2900
2850 CoL=>Mon (48)
2800 Warriors exploring
2750
2700 Warrior finds road of another Civ
2650 Hut found on Third Continent. Might be a scroll - no new Continent bonus. Save this one for after Monarchy.
2600 Americans (Icy): give Maps, get Peace. No tribute. Another hut, on a new island. We'll try it.
2550 Hut: Horse (Third Colony)
2500 Hut: Fourth Colony, one square from the great special site.
2450 Monarchy=>Currency (Instant Revolution)
2400
2350 tipped previously found Hut: Currency (policy vindicated)
2300 Researching Writing (78)
2250
2200 Settlers in 3rd Col.
2150
2100 Writing=>Trade (84)
2050
2000

1950* Aztecs: give Mon, peace; trade Maps for Pottery
1900 Fifth Colony founded.
1850 Wealthiest: 3:Americans 5:Aztecs 7:Greeks. Washington located.
1800 Teotichuan located
1750* Trade=>Literacy (126)

OK - here's where I start to lose the thread. The early middle game has so many possibilities that I become confused and try them all.

1700 Hut: NONE Archers
1650 Americans: Trade for Masonry
1600 Sixth Colony founded. Hut: 50 Gold.
1550*
1500 Forest Home founded as Caravan farm
1450 New York located. Eighth Colony founded
1400 Aztecs begin Hanging Gardens
1350* French begin Hanging Gardens
1300 Literacy=>Seafaring (165) Hut: Ninth Colony
1250
1200 Tenth Colony founded. Settlement slowing, Trade routes coming
1150* The Island builds Colossus =>warrior
1100
1050 Warrior built; Library started.
1000 First Pause - looks pretty good.
Cities: 10 + 3 settlers.
Science: 13 Techs, 24 Beakers/turn. Seafaring next.
Demographics - first in everything except military service.
Aztecs and Americans enthusiastic peace. I should ask for tribute now that I am supreme.
[that didn't work - I should have built MPE]
Next Goal- rush to medicine, build Shakes, Celebrate. Perhaps LH? Magellans? Conquer with crooks and Clads? or Early Landing with 9 Helper Cities - Republic soon followed by constant celebration. - I want to develop the Trading Empire, so LH and Magellans plus getting trade routes instead of wonders may be the most fun. Some wonders can be on the Southern Island. With city growth stopped at the 10-city portal, the towns will be size 3 soon. Temples. Perhaps I can trade for or steal Mono and build Mike's. For trading Republic and larger cities may be best, and Harbors will be needed. Science could well come from Caravans.

Tech path: Republic, Construction, Navigation. Harbor then Temple in SSC. Revolt soon after for SSC growth. Rush 4 Caravans and build LH in South Island. Finish roading American Island, then Temples and Dips for defence, then Caravans for SSC. After Republic, colonize intermediate island
