Spread religion when having taken a holy city?

What is the best way to be able to spread your religion after having taken a holy city and there are already much bigger religions in the game with strong religious pressure? If you are able to enhance your religion, do you go veneration and try to spam GP's? Or do you literally have to go on a killing spree and remove the other religions by taking more cities and then reform much later in the game?

Cathedral of Saint Basil is a good wonder. When you conquering a somewhat random religion, you have to take what you get. You can win a game without reforming
