Spyware and programs

How you guys doing I got a problem, A) I got a minor spyware problem and B) My computer has slowed down considerably. Do you guys know of any Freeware programs that prevent programs from opening and only allow the barebones processes to operate, anytips on how to speed up my computer. I got a 3.4HT processor amoung other things, so i don't think my computer is outdated, and if i had less, i thinknothing would work

If I read your post right (which I probably didn't, since I'm now half-dyslexic as a result of a calc test this morning...), you want to run the computer in safe mode (i.e. run just the operating system and no unneeded programs such as spyware. Running in safe mode will allow a spyware program like Adaware to get at problems it might otherwise not be able to get at, especially if the spyware is deeply dug in. Basically (assuming you already have Adaware, if not then you would install it first), you would restart your computer, but repeatedly press F8 while the computer is first starting up. You should get a menu, with one of the options being "Safe Mode". Choose "Safe Mode," then when the computer has finished starting up, run Adaware. You can get out of safe mode by restarting the computer.

edit - you mean run it "bare-bones" while you're scanning for spyware, right? Or did I read that wrong?

That makes no sense.

If you want to run just the barebones processes boot your computer into Safe Mode.

If you want to be fresh and have your computer run smooth reformat.

If you just want a program to determine what programs to run at startup, then it depends on what version of Windows you are running, but if you are running 95/98 then you can use msconfig.exe, which comes with Windows. It isn't in Win2K or WinXP, though. That said, if the problem is the computer running slowly, and spyware programs don't help, then the best solution may be, as Jeratain said, to reinstall.

well i deleted a good amount of usless programs and deleted spyware in safemode and everything is alot faster. I have before comtemplated reformating, but i want my files and i dont have a spare hardrive around to preserve files so....

Back in 2000, I downloaded a neat little program called Startup Cop that allows me to disable any and all programs that run at startup. Unfortunantely, it's no longer freeware (you have to pay now), so if are interested, PM me.
