Has anyone figured out what should be built in a SSC in Civ III?

well, the same things as in Civ2 :). Although the SSC is not nearly as strong as in civ2, because the beakers are only added to the base value. I loved SSC in civ2 but in civ3 I only build it on lower levels, just isn't worth it.

erm, maybe this is a stupid question but, what is SSC?

A SSC is a Super Science City... it comes out of Civ 2 where scientific improvements multiplyed the current level of science in a city. You could easily end up with a city producing over 200 science proints per turn.

Its a Special Science City

I reckon almost everything you can-

A good science city is going to be large and generate lots of cash and food.

It needs to be near either the capitol or the FB so it is probably safe from any attack.

On a river is good to because of the extra gold and it can grow past 6 before you have aquaducts.

So you need improvements to:
make it grow fast
make people happy
increase cash
increase science
deal with pollution

All these you should build instantly with cash as you need to spend all shield production on science wonders (and the Collossus if on coast).

A few great leaders will help but you won't have enough. So you also need improvements to increase shield production - factory, power plants, offshore platforms etc.

Some of my most succesful science cities have been sites or the iron works.

The hoover dam in another city will help.

The only thing I don't put in my science city is military stuff and wonders that affect my empire as a whole.

I try to create such SSC (first time i read this term) on levels up to Emperor. I would have this in my mind from the beginning and build a port close to the capital. I would be looking for 10 tiles of coast and 10 tiles of land (a couple of hills would help but not more than a couple). I'd build the Colosuss, all the science techs and try to get copernicus, newton and seti toghether. I know that is not cummulative but the trick is the following:

The city will have mines on the land tiles which would be used to build improvments. But I can easily switch the tiles to the sea to get maximum commerce whenever possible. Moreover I would add workers to this site to grow it asap. I would also try to buy the improvements and leave the workers on the sea tiles as long as possible.

PS: I use the words 'sea' and 'coast' interchangeably so don't get me wrong. Don't know how many beakers I get but it's usually a lot more that a regular city.

Of course it's only one city. I can't duplicate those wonders.

Edit: Of course I'd put the city on a river if I have the option:)
