SSG01 - Succession Story Game - Holland to Hydrae

Added the link back in, choxorn - thanks for the headsup ;)

I went for a little more humor in mine - I dunno that I succeeded.

btw - those were the actual numbers - Amsterdam went from 119K->70K when it made a settler, and Rotterdam was 10K when it was founded. I sort of assumed that they lost a bunch of people to the land on the way, I guess.

Your link has too many "http"s. I can't get it to work even when I removed the extra.
This is the link as posted:

This is the link as it should be:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=6867124&postcount=7

I tried the first link. New browser, but Internet Explorer cannot open the page. I removed the first http:// but that did not work either. The next segment was http//; it is missing the colon, but I did not see that then. It didn't work either.

The second http and the two slashes must be eliminated in order for the link to work.

lurker's comment: Screenie? :)

Could probably use a roster update at this point, too:

Roster:

1. Anaxagoras - still drooling in his sleep
2. AutomatedTeller - planning new tricks with AutomatedPenn
3. Rodent - just played
4. CivRulesAll - UP!!
5. CommandoBob - On Deck
6. ThinkTank - In the Hole

well, Utretcht will certainly provide some good fodder for stories! especially if japan burns it to the ground - we should probably get some garrison forces there ;)

I'm thinking we start going east and south east now...

Guys... I think you need to up the ante on your story-telling. if the stories get any smaller, we won't be able to find them. :(

Y'all might want to do a quick read of "Theodora's Always War Sid Excellent Adventure just for a way of looking at things.

This game itself is getting rather tense early on. I always find the Japanese to be very encroaching in my games.

I agree with Darcy, to some extent. I am working on a story which harkens back to the first turns which I hope will reset the tone to some extent.

I also think we are not doing great with our play. For those following at home, here is a screenie:

I guess I'm kind of wondering why we built two cities one square off of water. In the case of The Hague, we're one square off the ocean, which means we are one square too close to our capital and are not able to use our seafaring ability. In the case of Utrecht, it means we are forced to build an aqueduct when there are sites in four out of eight neighboring squares where we get one for free.

And, although we have talked extensively about how we need to be gearing up for an early war, we have started neither a SoZ pre-build, nor a barracks. We haven't even captured an elephant.

None of these are mistakes we can't recover from, but we need to raise the level of play a bit. If you have doubts about what to do, please ask. Playing as a team is what Succession Games are about, so let's get our heads together and do our best to play as well as we can.

CivRulesAll, is that a got it? You can play 9 turns or 10, it is up to you.

I didn't realize we were so cramped with Japan. Ouch!

We have a settler due next turn. Where should it go? The hill just NE of the last Ivory looks good to me; we snag an Ivory of our own; we sorta block off the land north of the Ivory for just us and we have a town in a good defensive position.

The hill E-2SE of Rotterdam gives us two Ivory; we have to road through some forests (or chop them).

We need a second luxury to help with despotic happiness, Statue of Zeus or not. Our choices are Ivory, Ivory, Ivory, Ivory or Ivory.

Unfortunately, your only chance at gettig the SoZ will be Amsterdam, unless you can get Rotterdam productive soon. I'm not sure you can wait until the SoZ to attack Japan, they are crowding you to the extreme. War with Japan could also net the furs at Tokyo, so that may need to be soon. Archer rush?

I like the strategy of putting a city on the hill NE of the last ivory, but it looks to me as though that would give us yet another city one off the coast. It is looking more and more like we are on a continents map (note the shape in the minimap), so getting monopoly contacts with continent number two needs to be a priority, and that means boats. Only Amsterdam can build boats at the moment, and we want settlers more than curraghs. If we get on that hill and it really is one-off, we should move the extra square to the coast. That means we'd need the hill E-2SE of Rotterdam in order make a culture wall.

We cannot afford to build SoZ in Amsterdam under any circumstances. Amsterdam is the only settler pump we'll get for awhile. We can't afford to tie it up in a wonder. The Hague has three BG in the fat cross, though. If we mine like crazy over there and keep Utracht from working the third BG, we could make it work. The real issue is getting a pre-build started. The AI doesn't pre-build except by accident, so if we can get a start now or at least pretty soon, I think we can snag it. The problem is, it won't help immediately even if we do. With already five Civs in contact, an archer rush may be an unfortunate necessity.

We will get Phil in about a set. We'll need to talk about what to get free if we are first. We can save that for when it happens, but meanwhile let's make sure we are traded up to get the expensive techs for free if it looks like we'll miss on the slingshot (and we might, since I doubt the AI is working on CoL).

Greece is going to be tough. Hoplites and probably claim on the only visible horses. We need an embassy to make them allies.

Lots to think about with such a crowded start.

I'd prefer a different strategy:

Amsterdam creating settlers.
The Hague and Utrecht pumping out workers - each of them have a food bonus. I wouldn't give them a granary yet, though.
Rotterdam creating garrisons and then military - once Japan runs out of space, their first target will be Utrecht, unless someone else pisses them off. We have 3 workers - we need twice that many now. We need roads to Utrecht.
I think it's going to be very difficult to get SoZ, unless no one researches Math until Pyramids/Oracle/ToA/Lighthouse all cascade. And I don't think that's all that likely.

Nice thing is that Persia is south, not south east, like I feared.

I'm thinking city sites of:

1 N of mountain.
1 S of where the warrior in the east is.

In the hills where we were talking about. What do you guys think?

Newbie Mistakes :( . I say forget the wonders and kill japan fast

lurker's comment:

I'm in complete agreement with Overseer - an Archer rush is required ASAP. Apart from the obvious benefits of creating room for expansion and capturing those furs, razing Osaka and Tokyo will be sufficient for an advantageous peace - you should be looking at demanding several techs at this stage, where two cities represents a sizeable percentage of their total.

BTW, Anax, are 'lurker' stories welcome?

lurker's comment: I would recommend building some culture in Utrecht, you can steal some Japanese tiles and lower the chance of it flipping. Remember, you need to build a few archers before making the archer rush, and a temple/library in Utrecht can be built in the meantime. It WILL make things easier for you.
