For the other parts, details are not settled yet. I can tell you that :
- There will be several fields (trade, agriculture, religion, cavalry, etc.), with several levels.
- You will progress possibly in all the fields at the same time, but not at the same speed
- The speed of progression will depends on your actions.
- As requirement, you have a field and a level.
For instance, for the upkeep of an armor division, you may need level 1 in the "armored warfare" field. But to create it, it may require level 3.
So if you are level 2, you must buy your armor to a nation that is level 3, then you can upkeep them. If you are level 0, you can't even upkeep it.
About learning : if you trade a lot, you will increase your trade field. If you make coastal cities, you will increase your navy field. If you have some horse resources, you will increase your cavalry field. If you make war, your militarism field.
In some case, you won't be able to study a field before you "release" it.
For instance, you cannot progress in cavalry in you have no horses at all and are isolated (the Aztecs). When you are confronted to cavalry units, or if you trade horses, you will start to learn the field. When reaching level 1, you will be able to build your first cavalry unit, from traded horses. When you reach level 2, you will be able to breed horses, and create your own stocks from traded horses...
Is this the startings of the tech editor, sounds pretty good.I know how they are used as requirement for units.

That's a really good idea for SSS and Civ 3Another idea to add, would be something like "sharing" a research with other friend(s) nation(s) in the later stages of the game.
Like the Europeans who did put all their funds together to research "Space flight" (Ariane Espace program) for their mutual benefits.

For example, if you had a transport unit, like Wyrmshadow's (i think) that has an open top, could you make it so that different graphics are used for times when it is loaded as opposed to times the ship is empty? i.e. the transport looks empty when it is empty and full when its full?
Also, could you explain how you are using mercenaries?
