I am sceptical towards the OP, not this particular poll. I would not call Alexander Nevsky the greatest Russian, but I am more or less satisfied with the 12 nominees. They certainly deserve a place among 100 greatest Russians of all time.

And this ladies and gentlemen is BULL. Russians and Georgians, while having their problems are both Orthodox countries with people that mostly have their heads on straight. Friendship between people of our nations lasts for many hundres of years. No Sashkavilli (or other Presidents) are going to change that. So, with regard to despising: shut it.

The point is that he got you into the sh*t in the first place by allying with Hitler and trusting him. Stalin was

1) such an idiot that he actually let the Germans carry out a surprise strike
2) such a warmonger that he was planning his own surprise strike and got caught off guard in the mids of his preparations.

Either way, Hitler would have never got so far without active Soviet support in 1939-1941 period.

So, you're celebrating a fool who almost got "your" country destroyed and who was responsible for millions of unnecessary war casualties (stupid military tactics, stupid moves like the final battle of Berlin - even the Russian soldiers lambasted him for ordering a slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Russians in an unnecessary operation when the war was already won).

So again, is that a sheer idiocy or some kind of masochism that drives you to like this guy?

With all due respect to Mr. Saakashvili, he's nothing compared to Stalin. He's not comparable to him in any respect and the West certainly doesn't cherish him as the 3rd most popular guy.

Somebody quoted the comments by some Russians during the war, the were pretty straightforward about bombing the bastards and killing them to the last. Russian racism against Caucasians (I believe that include Georgians too) is pretty well-known thing.

Anyway, Stalin was a Georgian, so how can you call him the 3rd greatest Russian?

Stalin did make Russia into a superpower, that counts for something I guess. Sure he refused to believe the Germans were about to attack but I'd say he did a pretty good job of preparing Russia for war economically.

Umm, we had the same type of contest here in the Czech Rep. a while ago - as far as I understand it, it's not about voting for the greatest jerk or greatest mass murderer, it's about voting for people who were good.

Russians obviously do admire Stalin, otherwise he wouldn't be on the 3rd place (from top).
