Gameplay Ideas

A gameplay idea could that species can be recruited from there native planets only(Wookies from Kashyyyk,Hutts from Nal Hutta,Twileks from Ryloth)
I think there should be 8 types of planets.(Examples are given)

Grassland-Naboo,Dantooine and Alderan(Before Episode 4)
Oceanic-Kamino and Manaan
Arboreal-Kashyyyk,Yavin 4 and Endor
Volcanic-Mustafar and Sleyheyron
Desert-Tatooine and Ryloth
Barren-Korriban
Ice-Hoth
Asteroid-Peragus II

I think it was decided not to use civs like the Wookies (one species). You might as well add in one civ for every single Star War race.

A list of civs is buried somewhere- I think in the last page of the "New SW Mod?" thread, something that was ironically only me wondering what was going on (since up until that point most stuff was being discussed in revived threads), and has turned into a brainstorming thread, general discussion thread, and requests thread.

One thing: I hate "CIS". I don't say that lightly, either. I can't stand the name. My personal favorite Star Wars game, SW Galactic Battlegrounds (the adaptation of Age of Empires II), calls them the Confederacy, they were called the Confederacy in the movies... the first place I saw "CIS" appear was in Battlefront. And I didn't really like it there either.

Maybe for novel readers (and I am not one of them), the name has been used.... but to my knowledge, it hasn't been.

With all respect Yoda is a terrible leader for the Republic, the Jedi order is independent of the Galactic Republic (remember order 66)

Also the Republic Pre and Post Ruusan Reformation are very different

Rebel Alliance(New Republic included)

Remember that the Rebels are a confederacy
 
CIS is just Confederacy of Independant Systems. It's their full name. And canonized.
But it is perhaps more explanatory than CIS to use 'just' Confederation as designation.

As for the Mandalorians. I'd use the name 'Mandalorian Clans'.

If you're going to put in things like Black Sun and the Zahn Consortium, other minor faction are just as deserving a place. Factions such as the Hapes Consortium for instance.
Or the Hutt Cartels who have their own worlds.

Ssi-Ruuk and those pesky Yuuzhan Vong 'may' be an option too. Though i'm not fond of them.

Canderous Ordo in Kotor 2 or the classic Mandalore the Indomitable are good picks.
What type of Mandalorians are you going for?

The first 2 hold my favor. Of course in time you could expand the choices like in some mods.

In the case of era-bound scenario's.
If it's an Old Republic mod you could go for the first or preferably 2nd Mandalore.
If it's Kotor era, you could go for Canderous.

Boba Fett is mostly a bad choice. Though an iconic and cool char. (just like his father) He never lead the Mandalorians as a large faction. Though in the novels he's been trying to reform them, in that case they're still little more than a planetary defence force / elite mercenaries.

So i'd advise you to go for a classic Mandalorian who truly led all the Clans.
Also i'd go for Mandalorian Clans as designation, not Mandalorians.

Another option is -> title = Mandalore. Name is addition such as: 'The Indomitable', 'The Preserver', 'The Ultimate'. As name and title are more or less the same for the Mandalorian leaders.

I'd advise you to start with a specific era and build on that.
Choose Clone Wars, Classic Era or Remnant Era to start with as those three have most content to work with.
If you finetune that and made a historical scenario for that era you can go on to a later era with more specific factions.
It'll not only keep things more doable and contained, it'll make balancing the game more easy as it'll grow in pre-set blocks. If you manage to integrate those 3 era's you can start experimenting with vaguer era's. Such as the Sith Wars, the Mandalorian Wars, Vong Invasion, Rise of the New Empire etc.

If you, for example opt to for Remnant Era, you have a good basis of big and small factions:

- The New Republic
- The Imperial Remnant (can even be split into several warlords or kept united under Thrawn and/or Pellaeon)
- Hutt Cartels
- Zahn Consortium
- Hapes Consortium (Hapes, Dathomir etc are in there, they're quite powerful in fact)


I'd need to look things up to find some more but the New Republic never truly manages to reunite all and in fact splinters of into smaller bits at times.

Tech could also be used to reflect the creation of the Galactic Alliance, the New Empire etc.

On the other hand if you'd like to keep things simple early on. The best era is the classic era:


Main focus on:
- The Galactic Empire
- The Rebel Alliance

Smaller factions (not persay even included):

- Black Sun
- Zahn Consortium
- Hutt Cartels
- Pirates

An alternative is Old Republic Era:

- The Republic (Major Power)
- The Sith Empire (Major Power)
- The Mandalorian Clans (Medium Power)
- Black Sun (small faction that would be challenging to play)
- The Fringe (underpowered neutrals)
- Pirates (another underpowered faction that starts off very limited)
 
I'm redoing barbarians as pirates.
I'll take all of that in mind.
I'll put the civ list with there leaders here later.

If you're not going for a scenario system perhaps you could use the SW era's to replace those in-game?

I would love to make scenarios. But if I were in charge, we would be making Final Frontier version of Star Wars with ground battle scenarios with space terrain at the top of each planet, like this:

Then you could have "landings" of troops from space to your planetary battle. Like a Battle of Hoth where the Rebels started in the land area and the Empire started in the space area. I'd even make the map one of those Toroidal maps to make it work.

Sadly, the era system does not support different civs spawning per era without heavy DLL changes (as I explained in the other post, like RFC).
 
Hmmm i'm more an advocate of multi-tile planets with the rest being space.
A bit like the Civ 2 Star Wars mod.

The issue is that this is Civ 4, not Civ 2. And in Civ 4 we have a mod that does solar systems already, it's called Final Frontier, and it was made by Firaxis. And that every other sci-fi mod made in BTS has used Final Frontier.

I was the one who wrote the code to make multi-plot planets, though, so I decided I'd just go with it anyway.
 
The multi plot planets are what we are going to use because they let us have land battles and space battles which makes this a much more realistic way to do it
 
IMO i would start with a small amount of civilizations like 4-6 main ones then every unit they have can be unique

and are you guys planning on doing a final frontier (like 1 planet and the rest is space or what?)
 
we're doing a nine plot planet but yes it is partially off of final frontier

For leaders I would widen the era beyond KotORs. There's lot to choose from. Exar Kun or Kaan would be my first choices. Korriban is fine capital for second and later generation sith, but for the "true sith" like Marka Ragnos or Naga Sadow, Ziost would be more correct. I think Korriban is where they buried their dead lords, a holy city of sort, while Ziost was the administrative capital.
Yuuzhan Vong

The problem with the Vong is that they would need so much work. Their own unit graphics for everything, their own tech tree probably. It's too much.

Rancor is a Dathomiri beast. Some kind of mercenary squad made of species like Nikto, Weequay and Gamorreans would be more fitting, I think. Hutt light cruiser might be for the unit for space, unless some sort of pleasure yacht could find some reasonable use as an unit.

UUs for space are easy. The Space Dragon and maybe the Nova-class battle cruiser. For ground I don't know. Her Majesty's Select Commandos perhaps?

The Hapans would be a pretty nice civ to add. They have been around for some thousands of years and though realtively small in galactic scale, they have been pretty prominient in some of the later stories.
