I usually go for alpha as the first tech to research (in cases I have chosen an Civ to play with which brings that not along as it's starttech - in this cases I go straight for Literatur)

I did vote (masonry), thou this heavily depends on the situation.

Having Pottery can greatly facilitate the start of the game making it easier to grab all of that land before the AI. Aside from that, Alphabet is at the top of the list.

Usually none of the above.
Playing mostly with the Romans, and having Alphabet from the start, i go for Writing.
Playing sometimes with France, and having Alphabet from the start... (same as above)

None of the above because it does make little sense to research the most ancient techs.
You can usually trade and or buy them (chieftain - emperor) or buy some of them and if you're lucky get others through small successful wars (deity)
I like commercial civs and therefore I go straight for writing --> literature - GL

If I don't have Pottery, Pottery first.
If I have Pottery, and not Alphabet, then Alphabet.
If I have both, Writing.

I put Alphabet anyway because quite often I'll trade for Pottery anyway.

Pottery takes less time to get than alphabet does and I never build a granary from start because I want to have atleast 2 warriors (or even better scouts!) scouting the nearby area. So while I'm trying to get pottery as soon as possible I prebuild something else after the initial warriors and when I get pottery I make the switch to a granary and then settlers all the way..... That's why alphabet is more preferable than pottery....

Bronze working because I like to be able to build spearmen fast. Then I can shoot for iron working to see the precious iron resource.

Alphabet is quite useful for the beeline to Philosophy (free tech) or Literature (GL).

Setting up the republic slingshot is vital. Alphabet always goes first. Snag bronze working with early writing or alphabet trade and iron working with philosophy trade after you got the goody from it.

Alpha. For Great Library and if I'm on Archipelago, Great Lighthouse.

I almost always go with a second level tech first (Iron Working, Writing, Mysticism, depending on which Civ I start with). The first level techs are easy early trades or goody hut treats.
