Staying in Monarchy...

In the current GOTM I decided to be a builder, though that was a VERY bad idea for this GOTM. Every so often id get into a quick war and take some citties so i generally had a large army, plus three units in most citties for the MP content faces.

After I got to cavalry almost all my citties were size12 and i was ready to kick some ass, my army was fairly large, and i was still earning 120gpt even though my science was at 80%.

Soon I took my continent, where the AI had already built my citties for me :D.

No this is whrere the odd part came in, peace was up, and i decided to go to democracy... and I just couldnt support my army, in monarchy I was at 120gpt and under democracy it was JUST 20...

Now i remember last time i played a game and i was democracy i was able to build large armies and my gpt was still very substantial, this time, no go.

What could I be doing wrong thats making democracy so worthless for me in terms of $$$? Or is Monarchy simply are superior form of government, and I should use it more with my style of playing (that is being a builder and then rushing the AI with my very productive and well built citties)?

EDIT : Forgot to add, corruption is not a proble, because of the MPs i have, and with lots of luxuries, my citties are usually in WLTKD :D.

In monarchy, you get free upkeep for 2 (or 3 or 4, I don't recall) units per city, and you must pay for each additional unit . In demo, you just pay 1 gold per unit.

Democracy is a far superior government compared to Monarchy. You probably haven't built banks in all your main cities. Banks w/ democracy should allow you to afford a big army.

You also probably don't have a centrally located palace or forbidden palace.

Lower your science, in Democracy I am usually able to get a tech in 4-5 turns at 50-60%.

adlots,

Monarchy can be more efficient than Democracy if you have lots of units. Still. if you changed to Democracy you either don't want to wage war or you want to research faster.
You might consider disbanding some units which is useful because you can help less developed cities with extra shields.
You might lower your science rate. Changing to Democracy lowered your money but increased your science research.
How much you spend on science anyway?
Because if you were going 80% science and 20% gold and changed governments 80% of the improvements in commerce went to science and only 20% in gold, while the upkeep cost added to your expenditure.

One more advantage with democracy you can get the same science output at 40% that you were getting at 80% under monarchy. With that other 40% you can easily earn more money or put a little into happiness.

But most of that gets taken away if you have a large army. You may end paying 300+ gold just for unit support. And then you'll have to put in alot of money for war weariness. You can't simply stifle unhappiness like in monarchy, also.

ADLOTS, I don't know if this will help but here goes anyway.

Do you use the governors to look after happiness? If you do then during your change to democracy you went through anarchy. During anarchy the governor changed things around to prevent uprisings under anarchy, then you change to democracy. The governors have left things set for running under anarchy, at least until next turn. You can trigger the governor to "catch up" by going to one of your cities and calling up the governor. Click OK and it will now change all your cites to the current form of government. Now check your financial situation, adjust your rate of science to reflect a rate of discovery that is fairly similar to how quick you were discovering under monarchy for a fairer comparison.

If you are still less productive than monarchy, you have not developed your cities (empire) enough or you may have too many low end units that might just as well be disbanded.

I had banks in over half of my citties, the other half of my citties were still under developed...

This was how things were

10% lux, 10% tax, 80% sci - libraries and universities in as many citties as those which had banks.

In the game a few turns back i was in defecit, in hoping that i could get a tech lead and trade for soem luxuries/gpt. I railroaded most of my tiles and now my gpt is a lot higher. Perhaps now would be a good time for democracy, at least if i wasnt in an infantry + cavalry war... :(.

I didnt check how quickly i was getting technology when i switched to democracy, mayb it was a lot quicker adn i didnt need as high science.

thx for all the advice
