StGNES IV Rise of Nessos II

Mein Gott!!! Okay all the old crew is on board. I have a very busy day today, but I will try to finish the stats by the end of it.

Of course, most respected Senator Nero.

This is what I am for, should I be elected into the Senate as Consul.

FOR A Strong, Centralized, and Unified Government
FOR Plebian Rights.
FOR A Strong, Protected Economy.
FOR A Strong, yet moderate Foriegn Policy.
FOR A Strong, Professional Military force - under the leadership of the Republic and only the Republic.
FOR Flat, productive Tax codes.
AGAINST Fuedalistic Land Policies.
And AGAINST The opposite of all that has been listed here.

Please, noble Senators, mind that these are just basic tenents of my belief in how this great Republic should run. I do hope you all consider the needs of the Republic more than you consider the needs of yourselves. We are, afterall, Civil servants.

Mathél Etheliari could not hear more, they all where for a Republic, wasn't there on family who still stood tall for a Monarchy. The Etheliari the oldest family in Nessos where always pro-monarchic. How could someone rule Nessos without being chosen by the gods. Mathél felt he was chosen by the gods ans spoke:

"Fellow Nessons, have you forgot about our great Monarch, do you really think that you could rule Nessos? Our family will not participate in this election! I had a vision to, but not about prosperity, no fellow Nessons not about honey and milk no, it was a vision with blood and kinstrife. It was a vision where Nessos was a republic. I Mathél Etheliari feel chose to be the new Monarch of Nessos, for we need a true leader, one with a pure heart and great wisdom, someone from a family who's lines are far older then other family's therefor chose me as your true Monarch!!!"

And it was silent.

oeps true....sorry I'm Dutch.....language barrier ;)

Senator Vipsanius stood. "Senator Paleologius, I have some small interest in military affairs, it being my Family's main trade. With respect to your 'Strong but moderate' military policy, I have but one question. If we are moderate, then we do not behave overly belligerently, so the basic premise of that is that we stay at peace. However, a strong city can be perceived as a threat and drive us into war with many other nations, trying to destroy our power. By not acting, but creating a strong army and doing little with it, we appear to be merely biding our time and waiting for the right moment to strike against the other cities of the world. It seems to me that those two things do not mesh well."

"Too true Senator Vipsanius, too true. However as you know, without a strong military, the nations which surround us will be even quicker to attack Nessos. It is, in my opinion, best if we focus on the growth of a strong military, to combat possible threats to our soveriegnty in the future. Belligerence towards nieghboring cities at this time would not be prudent, as most are much stronger than us, unless a suffiecient cassus belli can be found. Also, it is in my belief that in our foriegn policy we must remain nuetral for the most part, siding with those who will only benefit us. If we maintain such a nuetrality, and our strong army, nations will avoid coming into conflict with us, for they will be too busy picking on weaker nieghbors. If in case the need arises, and when our armies are suffieciently prepared and professionalised, as Im sure it will be in the possible near future, then I am all for the use of our military force to further the goals of the state. "

"Pardon, Senator Etheliari, have you gone stark mad? The Republic, formed upon numerous ideas, several from my great ancestor Aemilius Paeologius, has been with Nessos for nearly two decades past. There is no more monarch, there is but an equal republic. Such proposition on your part, to reform the monarchy under your name, is insanity at best and treason at worst. I, and I am sure the rest of the Senate aswell, will have none of it."

hm so noone else is running? funny, we have the right amount of spots open as there are candidates then..

Very strange....but it will do.... real elections would mean more fun :p

"Senator, we live in a Republic, a democracy. It is perfectly normal to suggest the fact the Plebians should have rights, and should be allowed to advance in society as any other citizens. In my view they should be given equal rights of law, equal rights of representation, with a lower house of the Senate for the Plebs to voice their concern. In short, I believe a full, formal equality between the Patricians and the Plebians. However, the High Senate and the office of Pontifex Maximus (High Priest), will, as always, remain a primarily Patrician organization. With the exception of those Plebs who have attained such wealth and influence to be allowed into these great halls, such as Senator Commenus."

"The Honorable Fortii familiy is disgusted at the words spoken by Senator Paleologius, talk of biding our military power, catering to the needs of plebs. I will not cast my vote in such a senate. I hereby proclaim that the Fortii family will abstain from the pathetic business this Republic has become. Perhaps when the old familys understand their folly, I will return, and the Fortii will lend its sword to the Republic once more."

This is getting more and more fun :D

OOC: So let's see, potential civil war threats: Nero, Fortii, Nero *and* Fortii... :mischief:

Stats half-done, should be finished tomorrow. Too tired now. Yeah it looks like we might have a little war in Nessos...... or even outside Nessos?

Position application deadline is tomorrow....

The headman of Atonditos family, Honourable senator Melkor Atonditos, speaks;

"Senators, fellow citizens of Nessos. I came here today only to listen the candidates for citys offices, and I was confident that each of us are capable to run them. But, after this days depates, I will have to question the motives of some nominees. It seems that some are only thinking about their own interests, not the one of the Republic. I'm afraid that if one of current nominees becomes a consul, Nessos will find itself either in the middle of civil war, or in war against it's neighbours, and therefore, I now officially nominate myself to the office of Consul, and I shall do all I that is in my power to preserve the peace.

It has been shown Plebians cannot govern themselves, which is why we are here. They do deserve equal protection under the law, but their incapability to government themselves means they should not be given an entire legislature. That job is up to us, the learned men of Nessos.
