If you're tired of getting solicitations on your cell phone or house phones, then you can pre-register with the State Attorney General to be part of the FTC's new Do Not Call List.

It's simple. You just put the name that the phone number is registered under, and the phone numbers you want to put on this list, and when the program goes into effect, your number will be on the FTC's Do Not Call List.

Californians: If you want to register or to read more about it go here: http://nocall.doj.state.ca.us/

I've already registered. It takes less than a minute.

EDIT: It's a national program, so check your own state websites to see if they offer the same program :)

As somf was so kind to link us to, there are other states that offer this pre-registration program as well. To see if your state offers this check here: http://privacycorps.com/pages/state_donotcall.htm?source=Odonotcalllist

If your state doesn't offer this, but you're interested in this system, it will be coming to you as well soon (Californians are just more important right now ) and you can check it out here: www.ftc.gov/donotcall

Neat.

So this is a fully-automated system to block connection between certain numbers?

What is the national Do Not Call Registry?

The registry is a list that consumers can join to reduce unwanted telemarketing calls to their home and cellular phone numbers. Consumers can register their numbers at no cost for five years. Telemarketers will be required to purchase the list, and will be barred from calling any phone number registered on the list, unless the telemarketer has written permission to call that number.

If you're not a California resident but you're interested in this system, it will be coming to you as well soon (Californians are just more important right now :D ) and you can check it out here: www.ftc.gov/donotcall

If you're a California resident, then go here to pre-register: http://nocall.doj.state.ca.us/

All they ask for is your name, zip code, and up to 5 phone numbers you want on the list (you cannot put business numbers on the list.) These numbers will remain on the list for up to 5 years.

The beautiful part is this: If you still get calls after you're put on the list and the program is going on - then you can sue the people that disregard this program for up to $11,000 :goodjob:
How does the Do Not Call Registry work for telemarketers?/ How does the Do Not Call Registry protect me from telemarketing calls?

The federal law requires telemarketers to search the registry every 90 days and delete from their call lists phone numbers that are on the registry. If you find that you are receiving telemarketing calls even after you have registered your telephone number, you will be able to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission or the California Attorney General. A telemarketer who disregards the national Do Not Call Registry could be fined up to $11,000 for each call.

Okay, but here's something else. It doesn't stop EVERYONE from calling. "Charities, political groups, small businesses with five employees or less, companies that have an established relationship with a consumer" are still allowed to call and wont be blocked.
