Strange Crash Problem

Hay,

I was updating my base (dunno what version) of BTS to the newest 3.17 so i could install some mods (haven't even extracted them yet so its not them). After installation i tried to boot BTS and the little loading screen came up, then the screen went black, as usual - but the screen stayed black and then went onto standby. I rebooted but the screen stayed on standby no matter what i tried.

I took the cable out and fixed a slightly bent pin but the problem persisted. It wasn't until i swapped the ends of the cable so the end that was in the monitor went into the computer (which resulted in no signal at all to the monitor and it staying off) and then swapped them back again that it worked. I got to my desktop and thought it was a hardware issue that i'd fixed so loaded BTS again, guess what same thing.

I just tested it with Crysis and that loaded fine

I've got a 8800 GTX connected to a ViewSonic VX922 with a standard DVI cable - Core2Duo 6700, 4GB ram, Win XP 32bit, DX 9C and my card drivers should be up to date

please post your dxdiag results file :)
I assume this did not happen before patching?
does Civ4 work fine?

How do I get my DXdiag file?

And no, didn't happen before patching.

And yes normal Civ IV isn't working ether. Infact I've worked out that anything that cuases the moittor to go black like some games or booting the computer for example causes the screen to black out and stay off. To get it back on I have to take out the cables and swap them twise as I said before.

Atm I'm seriously struggling to boot the computer, I'm on my phone, I can get the comp up for a few mins ever so often.

I can prob get the DX file for younthough

click start, click run, type dxdiag, hit enter
in the program that opens click save results
attach the saved file to a post here - you can attach files to a post by clicking on go advanced and then on manage attachments below the quick reply box.

Since this is likely not game related: also open the windows event manager as in the below link and look for any error messages in the event logs post any that happen around the time your screen goes black (if in doubt just put all recent messages in to a text file and post that here). :)

Hopefully thats what you need, if not just tell me.

And thanks for your help on this, i appreciate it :)

Im currently trying to set up a VNC viewer to bypass the monitor but i live in uni accommodation and am having to tether the viewing computer off 3G mobile phone network and its struggling.

I do not believe that it is the graphics driver - but yours is outdated so updating might be worth a shot: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_185.85_whql.html
I'll look through the logs tomorrow - don't have time right now :)

Edit: in the meantime, since this is certainly not related to the game itself: Moderator Action: moved to Computer Talk .

Can you tell us what time this happened so we can narrow it down in the log?

Im still having this problem.

to my mind it could be graphic drivers, monitor drivers or direct X (as it was changed when the patch was updated)

but ive tried the newest graphics patch and system restore and nothing :/

Dont do that quite yet. Do you have drivers for your monitor installed? That may be it.
