Hey guys, I've been playing civ 5 since it came out and I feel after playing on king often that domination is the easiest victory. I am going to explain my view point and strategy and I would like to see the communities opinion on my strategy and your own strategy.

Strategy Topic for v1.0.0.7 (er whatever)

So I always try to aim for a quick domination victory and take over my nearest enemy as quickly as possible. The reason is because in order to get a science victory you need to get the 2nd to last technology (nanotechnology) in order to get a SS statis chamber. I have a quick win personality ha. Culture you have to get at least 26 policies and build the uptopia project which takes a while. Diplomatic takes one of the last technologies as well, and isn't as fun ;). And time, well.. time is dumb (in my opinion).

SO What I tend to do is aim for getting an early settler around a nice productive area near my capitol, then try and conquer the nearest enemy to me. Puppeting the conquered cities, so I don't have to deal with the 15% culture limit increase on getting policies. The reason is because then I will have 2 cities quite productive enough to pump out units while getting the culture from the puppet cities, while only having to deal with the culture cap rising on policies with making more cities. This strategy allows me to chase for a domination victory, and if that doesn't work out I am already setup heading for a culture victory with the puppet city.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Questions?

Let me know,

I also find for domination victories it helps to conquer your enemies.

Playing Caesar, Huge map, King.

I got landed in the middle of the amazon, and I was the only one in South America. I was surrounded by Dyes and spices, and there were massive amounts of iron in the andes and the Argentenian foothills. I tanked settlers early, rushed the Russians in North America, and built up Research the rest of the game. I almost managed a space race victory, but Time got me before I could finish the factory.

That sucks, I usually turn time off ;) and sometimes diplomatic.

A topic for specific Civ5 strats and insights sound good.

Best way to open

I believe the best thing you can do when starting a game is rushing for 2-3 scouts first instead of the regular Civ4 worker opening. They will help in many ways :

- First you will get very nice bonuses from ruins. Gold, information, unit upgrades, free units.
- Second you will find barbarian settlements you can destroy for gold.
- Third the barbarians you find on the way will provide experience. Later on these scout units can be upgraded to archers+ and have many great upgrades already not to forget the "ignore terrain penalty" trait that will stay useful all the way up to the time these scouts become infantry and beyond.

For best results get the policy so all new barbarians settlements get revealed as soon as they respawn. (This works on all explored terrain!)

With the money you get from ruins and barbarians you can ally with city-states. My favorite this early in the game are the ones that give culture, since they are the best source of culture and thus policies early on. +12 culture per turn, or a free military unit every 17 turns, or +2 food in all your cities and +4 in your capital, the C-S bonuses are not bad at all! + from my experience with them as allies they help in wars and send fighting units to assist.

Tip: wait for 500 gold before you spend the cash. Spending 250 will only keep them on friendly for a half dozen turns before they drop to neutral. Never spend 250 unless 1) you know you will dig up another 250 to gift them in the following 6-7 turns, OR 2) the CS is in your way and you need free passage / open borders immediately.

Excellent scout idea, I didn't think about that. Are the scouts strong enough to kill barbarians though on a higher difficulty? Like King? (i've rarely used scouts)

The scouts are there because they ignore terrain, so they can explore the area really fast. From my experience they can beat barbarians in the open very well as long as you give them some bonuses from civics etc. And they do ok assaulting settlements, but it is generally a good idea to bring a second unit for that because of the fortification bonus.

I usually have the scouts in the frontline exploring, and a warrior or two slightly back at a central position (between my scouts and my cities) so i can either reinforce attacking barbarian settlements, or go back to my cities to defend if needed.

Good idea, I am going to use that in my next lets play ;)
