Strategy discussions

Should we build a harbor in any of those cities? I'd be inclined to say yes, since it will allow trade much earlier and will give us an extra HP for our flamethrowers. :mwaha:

Avtually I would never build a Dromon without a habor, but it's a good question anyway. Have a look:

Currently Beizjagd is building a barracks. After (probably) getting an agreement with Kueche I would like to change the build to something more useful. Either we start prebuilding the Great Lighthouse which would give us several advantages, or a habor to build veteran Dromons.

Regarding The Great Lighthouse:

The obvious advantges are:

1. Trade via sea tiles
2. 1 additional movement for naval units.

But the most important one for US as the Byzantines:

The ability to travel sea tiles!!!!

Why? Well, we have fatal bombardment. Imagine a 5 moves Dromon that can safely travel the sea. We'd be able to bombard our enemies (like The Brotherhood) from sea tiles, which puts our enemies (like The Brotherhood) to the risk of losing ships, if they counter attack. Or even better, they might not be able to find our ships at all, as we can retreat after bombing.

To make it short. The Great Lighthouse would be THE AA wonder for us.

And Beizjagd would be a good town to build it.

Any other opinions on this?

Yeah. I would say that we should switch the build to the Pyramids or the Palace as a prebuild for the GLH. Once we are done with settlers, Aerie and Beizjagd will be prime dromon-building cities. Leave the land military to cities like Aquila and Birds of Prey.

We can afford a couple of Dromons without harbours, since they can be used for bombarding. I would almost be tempted to build the Lighthouse in Aerie, as we will have moved out of the critical REXing phase soon. Though our worker pumps would have to take over as settler builders (or we build little to no settlers), so I'm not sure. But I think now that we are likely entering an alliance with our continent we'll definitely want the lighthouse.

I do not agree with that settling matter. From my point of view, we are far away from moving out of the critical REXing phase. There is plenty of room left from what I can see.

But the GLit would be fantastic for us, as I described.

Is the ability to trade over sea tiles relevant? It looks like we can get to the other continent via exclusively coast tiles.

I have to admit the coastal connection causes the Lighthouse to lose a lot of its luster. True that Dromons will be able to rest on sea tiles, but they can still be safely attacked by our enemies as long as they have a movement point left afterwards. I'm not disputing that the Lighthouse would be useful, but is it really 300 shields worth of useful?

A harbor is more important than a barracks at this point, but that city will reach 30 shields long before we have Map Making so we can build something else first. Settler?

The Great Lighthouse has never been that important in my games, unless I had to switch to it to save a pre-build. If we build the GL, doesn't it improve the speed/tile travel for all nations? With that and the easy inter-continental travel and trade, I'm just not seeing the benefit of shields and time for this. Maybe for the glory of being a sea-faring nation... :dunno:

I think we should build 1 Dromon in Beizjagd and then build a Harbor to produce vet Dromons. Our first one can get promotions eliminating the Barb Galleys. It will also announce our arrival as King of the Seas early. Let's see if others recognize our true lineage by the speed of our ships.

We need to build a LOT more Settlers. We were blessed with a very large area to grow in to. Let's put it to good use. This is the reason we need the Forbidden Palace, to help us in developing a larger nation. Please keep it as the FP.

Well, I do not insist on building the Lighthouse. :)

I just wanted to show up the possible advantages.

@Cyc: If it would enhance the speed for all nations, it would not make much sense to build it, right? ;)

Good, let's let some other nation build the Great Lighthouse.

Exactly, Calis. That was my point.

No it does not!!! :D

Hey, just more stupid wording in the Civilopedia. It says all ships. Just as The Manhattan Project allows all nations to build nuclear weapons. And think about it. If you build a lighthouse in your real life harbor, would it just help your ships? Or all ships?

I mean even spelling was a major issue for the Civilopedia for the good part of a decade. I gues being cryptic is good game programming.

And I would have sworn my vessel movement increased after the AI built the GL. Even though I elude the sea-faring techs as much as possible.

Calis, in the save turnover thread in civforum, you posted "Soll das hier hin???" in response to a post by Masquerin? What was the link/post about?

Google translation without the question marks is "Here to there". With the question marks, it's "To to there". Your posting was before the link was deleted, so I'm guessing you know what's up. Please inform us. Thanks.

The translation is: Does this belong here?

And it was related to a post of d7. He posted their latest turns moves in that post. :) But nothing I would understand, really. Nothing interesting.

We need to think about our short-term plans.

Some already talked about building habors and Dromons. As much as I like Dromonad I have to ask whether it would not be better to start with libraries?

Currently we are not in danger of being attacked from anywhere right now. We will get Republic in a reasonable time. Thus, having libraries in our best towns would be great from my point of view.

That won't delay Dromons too much, but would give us real researching power over our competitors.

What does the team say?

Culture, culture, culture. I'm all for Libraries. We can change Tuscan Talon's Harbor to a Library.

I'm ok with libraries. Are we still planning to build the Lighthouse in Beizjagd? If so, we should just build a palace prebuild there. After some libraries are complete we should produce settlers in a different city so Aerie can build one (as well as a harbour and dromons).
