The NES

Welcome everyone. It has been a very long time since I've ran a NES, over three years I believe, but I have some free time and a lot more experience now, and so I wanted to give this another go. As you will see while reading the rules this NES is not exactly like most others on the forum right now. It does not focus on rules or algorithms for combat and the economy, but on creating a story, or rather an alternative history, for this world. You way want to take a look at DP's Alternative Timeline Building Experiment for an idea of what this NES will be like. Now, players will not take "cultures" but nations in this NES, and we will have very basic stats, but the goal is the same - to create a very dynamic medium where we can create an alternative history.

Nations

Nations are pretty loosely defined for the purpose of this NES. Some may be the traditional nation-states, while others may be a collection of city-states or a tribal confederation or anything else of the like. I fully expect nations to rise and fall throughout this NES. Some will split into others, some will cease to exist completely, others may move geographically over time (like the Germanic tribes during the collapse of the Roman Empire). I hope that players who chose to participate in this will understand that this is part of history and will continue to contribute and participate with other nations that are rising or available at the time.

Players

You, the players in this NES, do not represent just the government of some given country. You are contributors to this NES and you have control not only over government policies but over cultural, religious, technological development of your nation and almost everything else that goes on in there. I hope that you will take this seriously and will dive into the possibilities of creating unique cultures and religions, guiding your nation through history. Most nations have gone through drastically different stages in their histories, sometimes jumping from one extreme to another, and I hope that this will give the players a chance to play around and experience a wide range of different situations with their nation.

Stories

Of course stories are very very much encouraged, as with every other NES. The more detailed information I have about the direction you would like to take your nation the more likely I am to carry out your intentions properly. Very often a lot of these plans can be open to other players and in these cases they should take the form of stories so that everyone can enjoy them. In cases where they cannot they should be sent as orders and I will be able to put the developments into updates. What I dislike is players sending massive orders with enormous descriptions of their plans for their country (and I am guilty of this as well) while not posting any of them as stories even though they would make great ones.

Orders

You will not have to spend too much time on orders. Sometimes they can be as short as a few sentences to give me some guidelines for the direction in which you would like your nation to develop, what you would like to emphasize and what is not so important for you this turn. I would like as much as possible of your creative spirit to take the form of stories, but I understand that for things like secret technological developments and military campaigns you will have to PM me orders. Just don't feel like you have to write a novel every time you have to send orders just because the stats are very vague.

Updates

There will be at least one update a week. There, I said it. At least one a week. Now, they may not necessarily be extremely long, but I will do my best to convey the direction in which the world is developing. If there is anything specific you would like in the updates let me know and I can probably do that.

Stats

Name - the name of your nation

Government - the description of the government of the nation, including how stable the government is, how much confidence the people have in the rulers, etc.

Military - the description of the army and navy (and air force) of the nation. It will include descriptions for the size, quality, organization, and other relevant factors for this.

Economy - the description of the economy, which sectors dominate economic activity in the country, how important trade is, how good the infrastructure of the country is, what kind of social safety net there is, etc.

Technology - the description of the level of technology that is in use in the nation. Most likely it will include the description of the quality of education and research performed in the nation as well.

Culture - the description of the culture(s) within the nation, important cultural trends, religion, and possibly education. Cultural animosities and grudges and other things like that.

Background - everything else that doesn't fit somewhere else.

Here is the starting map:

<snip>

Feel free to post what nation you would like, where you would like to start, and a few sentences about it. You can even make your own stats if you would like, I may correct them slightly if I find something wrong, otherwise that will save me some work.

Let's do this!

Name: California
Government: Aristocracy
Military: A group of 900000 police and 100000000 Marquis (specialized California Infantry) California's military also consists of A fleet of 400000 ships and 7000 bombers and 10000 fighters :p
Economy: Citizens are very rich. California depends on the rich, the entertainment business and tourism.
Technology: The rich set up labs and observatories and the children get the best education there is.
Culture: Consists of people from English, Swedish, and French dissent.
Background: to be edited in later

Starting position: Irvine California

Color: Maroon

Kirpon
Government: Monarchy with strong influence from merchants
Military: A couple hundred Axmen, a few dozen small ships
Economy: Mainly based around fishing and maritime trade
Technology: Extremely primitive, although sea craft are well designed.
Culture: (don't know what to put)
Background: Kirpon came to be through the efforts of Penagi Chu, the first King of Kirpon. Legend says he came from the sea on a black boat, and used his great skill in battle to unite the tribes on the island. His kingdom was based around power at sea, and any who dared oppose Kirpon were kept from the sea and slowly destroyed on land. Now a new king has taken over with the death of Penagi Chu, Pugashi Chu.

Wait, what is the general time period this is starting at?

Stormbringer- What exactly is preventing us from starting off with a army of 3 million?

Name: Bo Pin Min
Government: Tribal Confederation
Military: Every available male of weapon bearing age.
Economy: Mostly agricultural economy.
Technology: Fresh start, right?
Culture: Chinaman like culture... But wait 'till you see the kicker.
Background: A confederation of tribes around the hills of OTL Rome.

Stormbringer- What exactly is preventing us from starting off with a army of 3 million?

Ahm... the fact that I get to do your stats and not you? I appreciate suggestions, since you probably know better than I do what you want your nation to be like, but obviously nobody will start with an overly overpowered military or anything like that.

yep, starting age is 2000 BC. Sorry if I didn't mention it.

Amon Savag has set something interesting up... I wonder.

Name: The Japaiyo Confederacy
Government: Feudal Confederation
Military: Feudalized system of samurai (knights) who serve beneath shoguns (lords).
Economy: They ride the waves and enjoy the bounty of the sea.
Technology: None.
Culture: Japanese-like culture.
Background: A loosely connected confederation based near and around the Thames in Britain (called Brittoyo), where shoguns compete for power and influence but are united for common defense and potential profit.

You're on, Stormbringer. Let's see which lasts.

How realistic is this intended to be? (If a bit too high for my idea, I'm happy to revise)

Name: Army of Bregia
Government: Soldier's Republic in theory, in practice Bidocracy (everybody who wants to influence the government bids a certain amount of money in exchange for having their way. The Soldier's Council then rubber-stamps the winning proposal and takes all the money into the treasury)
Military: In theory, everybody. In practice, has a large number of ships and sailors but a very small army
Economy: Agricultural, with surplus income generally spent on the prestige from influencing government
Technology: Inferior technology in most aspects, but superior in it's navy
Culture: A compromise between traditionalistic influences (advocate what OTL modern people would call a Spartan culture, with the focus being on military restoration of the Empire of the Xaldars. Tend to be influenced by more primitive traditions), those of conquered peoples (polythiestic, easterner in their culture- tend to be pragmatic in their decision-making), and immigrants from the northeast (theoretically polythiestic but in practice not very religious, tend to be the most compromising of the groups).
Background: At one point earlier in history, the Empire of the Xaldars (immigrants from OTL West Anatolian coast) was expanding eastwards at what for the time was a rapid pace. The Emperor, wanting to consolidate his desired new capital (the city of Great Xaldar), created one of his generals General of the Army of Anatolia, instructing him to continue the advance and incoporation of the conquered territories.

The Xaldars were soon struck by a civil war, and the Army stayed neutral between claimants (initially to be above the fighting, later because it gave them de facto independence). The Empire, due to revolts of subject peoples, would soon fall- the Army then declared full independence.

The naval tradition was at first developed due to a plan to conquer Cyprus and sell it to pay off the Army's debts. The plan backfired, leading to a defeat off the coast. As a response, the General was overthrown and a "Soldier's Republic" declared, which was democratic in theory.

In practice, the Republic ran into difficulties due to the problem that the common people objected to taxes. To solve this, they began to accept money from rich land-owners...

Kirponese culture could be described as being very peaceful, and possibly dull to outsiders. It values peace and quiet, listening and watching. Patience is considered an exellent quality, while a short temper and acting before thinking will likely get you shunned. The Kirponese also value the sea, seeing it as a source of life and wealth, just as long as it is respected. Being a sailor is considered one of the highest honors in Kirpon, although those who have lost a ship or failed their crew in any way are considered a disgrace.

Just a little culture description for you.

That looks very very good NWG, I might change just a couple of things. I need to know where exactly you would like to start.

Somewhere in Anatolia will do.

EDIT: Maybe near Cyprus- that way the bit about a conquest attempt can be realistic.

Name: Gojoseon (Northern Korean Peninsula)
Government: Imperial Monarchy
Military: Centralized heirarchy with mainly land based cavarly, infantry, and archers.
Economy: Farming and trade with minor fisheries.
Technology: None.
Culture: Koreans
Background: Founded by Dangun of Sinsi, Gojoseon has united the local inhabitants under imperial rule. They are taught to rever loyalty above all.

Name: Habrevia
Government: Monarchy
Military:
Economy: Primarily based around fishing.
Technology:
Culture: Barbaric with religion heavily influencing the people.
Background: The Habrevian people have only recently started to settle down. After a large period of internal disputes by various factions the Jera faction has finally secured control and defeated all rival factions. Now the Habrevian people have started to look outwards as the Jera faction seek to increase their power. Only time will tell what is in store for the Habrevians.

Starting point: Habrevia is a City state based in Southern Italy. Around OTL Naples.

Name: Kreatos
Government: Monarchy
Military:
Economy: fishing + a little bit of trade
Technology:
Culture: worship of the elements
Background:The people of Kreatos have recently apointed a king to lead them into greatnes. They also united to boost their trade and to protect them from threats. But now perhaps other tribes have to be carefull...

Starting point: Kreta

Here is the map so far.

I will explain what the different colors mean in the first update on MONDAY. Look over your starting location, stats, etc. and if you have any kind of orders, comments, etc. go ahead and let me know!

Can Bregia be moved a little closer to the original idea? It was supposed to be (in theory, if not in practice) one single Army.

EDIT: Actually, you may have done that, now I think about it- so just checking.
