playing a Prince game to get back in shape after being out of CivIV for some time and pulled Hatty, on a small island which i prompy settled and started settleing very good land on the neighboring Continent which carries Native, Mali and Rangar ... but i'm in a problem ... i'm having 6 cities on my initial island (which is kinda crappy) and 7 on the Continent, which drains heavy money due to colony expences ...

how should i fix it ... wait it out pulling the brakes on expandtion, till i get Forgotten palace over there or?

Distance to cap isn't so bad. I'd SE it for a while and ride it out.

If you are playing on a Monarch or above, make him into a colony, he'll be a great pal all game, and you will have the benefit of AI bonuses.

If your economy isn't in immediate danger of total collapse (i.e. losing money at 0%) you'll be much better off keeping it for long term benefits. I would probably advise you halt expansion until the cities mature and grow to start supporting themselves and the FP is built.

12 cities is a nice large number for the BCs anyway, you'd probably want to cool down a little even if they weren't overseas.

well Joshua ... its Marathon and GLH and Currency with Intercontinal trade ... helps quite a bit :)

Build the one next to your capital, since it's at no distance, but otherwise, grow. All your cities are at sizes below 5. Let them grow to size 6 or 7, and you'll be fine.

Keep it, keep expanding. Just run specs to get the FP online then late game you can go SP if you need it.

I must admit I never tried it myself, but the best option might be the "mainland island switch" in which you build a new capital on the other continent. Then only your initial 6 cities would have to pay colony costs, while the new world has no colony costs. You'd still want the forbidden palace (in Memphis or Alexandria?) rather sooner than later.

well ... as far as i can count palace would be best of, playing with cottages in Hieraconpolis. Heiropolis, while having 1 more FP, have little less flatland and is more tunned for Production on the hills supported by FP farms

I agree with Celebithil. I'd seriously consider making the best city on the continent your capital and giving your original island the FP, especially if you're planning on conquering a neighbor or two on the continent. Only problem is that you lose the benefit of Bureaucracy in your current capital, so it's probably not a good idea to do it quite yet.

I've only changed capitals once, and it was a real no-brainer. I started in about Spain on a Terra map and was blocked off in about Germany by Sitting Bull (rushing obviously not an option), so I only got two cities down to the east, and meanwhile, the entire continent of Africa was empty and not connected to Eurasia. It's not quite as clear cut in this case, but I still think you'll eventually want your capital on the continent with the majority of your cities.

I agree with you, colonial expenses are just a horrible kludge put in the game to slow down warmongers, in the early game when you have a situation like yours it slows you down but in the later game when your economy is up and running it makes little difference.

I don't think it has been specifically mentioned but the Forbidden Palace will do nothing in your position as it doesn't effect colonial expenses. Your best bet will be to move your palace to the mainland, your best city will probably be an AI's former capital. In the meantime carry on settling the city sites you want, don;t worry if your economy tanks for a while, once you have finished the palace move you will be in an excellent position.

To help with colonial expenses you can build courthouses in your cities, they halve your total city cost. In the longer term you can adopt State Property as this eliminates colonial expenses completely.

But Colonial expenses are capped at 2x (IIRC) the distance expense. So building the FP will greatly reduce the colonial costs in cities near it and reduce its own city's distance and colonial costs to zero.

State Property is the long term solution and courthouses are essential before then. In this situation any new city gets granary and then courthouse before building anything else.

well ... question is how much of a loss not having thebes as a capital is ... it mainly have production and food (and planing it to be my wonderdrived GPfarm)
