Stupid jungle slowing everything down

I know I'm not alone in having performance issues wih CivIV, and am resigned to a a slow choppy late game unless I play with 2 civs on a tiny island, but I seem to take a massive additional performance hit when there are a lot of jungle tiles in my game.

I have turned down graphics options and resolutions but this seems to have a minimal impact on performance. I am generally fine until late game regardless of graphics options unless there are big jungles. Is there any way to combat this, some sort of unofficial jungle replacement patch or something?
